The New Mrs. Tibbetts
Dedicated May 2010

My theme is oak trees. Need help on favors... Please!

The New Mrs. Tibbetts, on April 1, 2010 at 9:39 AM Posted in Planning 0 19

Okay, so my wedding is May 22, 2010. We are having at least 170 guests. I have decided to go with an oak tree theme because (as cheesey as this sounds) as the oak tree grows and blossoms so does our love for one another, and also oak trees are built to weather the storm and so will our marriage.

We ordered 50 live oak seedlings. The reason so few: not everyone can plant it (if you live in an apartment, or condo), and not everyone wants one. Plus they are super expensive.

Now I am trying to find a favor that we can give to everyone. I was thinking chocolate molded like an oak tree, but so far they dont exist. The only molds I have found are for the leaf. So I was thinking about buying the molds off ebay and just making them myself. But that is gonna be alot of work, and I am already stressed out enough.

So what do you suggest? I want something that is ecofriendly and not something that everyone will just throw out. HELP!

What about acorns? Are there any chocolate candies molded like acorns?

I think the chocolate candy in either acorns/leaves would be fine. On ebay you can find some oak leaf soaps. Or somewhere out there I saw a place that sells pretty fabric leaves that you can have personalized with you and FH's name and wedding date.

Here's a site with Chocolate coins for which you can upload an image for the front of the coin and choose colors - they look kind of cool and you can customize it with your own image (maybe even with your WW avatar). No experience with them but they look nice.

    Just an idea . . .

You could always get a 2" diameter branch and cut it into 1/2" slices and seal them. With these slices you can either make them into key chains or insert a wire with a clip or spiral at the tap and do picture holders. On the wood slices you could also have your names, date, or both burnt into the wood.

I thought these were pretty awesome! They can later be worn on a chain, or keyfob.

I like the acorn idea....also, check out http://www.arborday.org/ There are ways you can donate in the guests' names to tree preservation, which is certainly ECOfriendly! Smiley smile

I am doing a "leaf" theme as well. I purchased a leaf punch online (a Martha Stewart brand) and I am planning on punching colored leaves to write all of my guests names on them with their table number on the back. I am going to attach a ribbon to each and hang them from a branch that is either set up inside or on the tree outside my reception hall (weather permitting).

We share the same wedding day! I saw a Martha Stewart show on April 1, 2010. They were making really cute fake tree stumps out of canning jars or jelly jars. It seemed like a pretty easy project and I think would be fairly quick but again you may not want to take on a project. But I just figured it was a nice idea as they looked so real. I suppose you can fill them with candy or put in some oak moss as a popouri type of thing. If you want to see these jars go to Martha Stewart Show website and you can view her site by date which is April 1st or type in Faux Tree Stump Container. Good Luck!

Try to not be so specific, go with a woods theme. You can bring in acorns, twigs, leaves, some wild flowers? there is so much you can do here to express your love for each other.

I love your idea of doing chocolate leaves or acorns. Since it is a lot of work though, is it something you could pass on to a bridal party member or one of your moms or aunts?

I also have the same wedding day. Second time around for me. Trying to think of a theme. It just seems like one of the least important things. I love yours. I wished this was my first. I love my finance' so much. He is my soulmate. I know that in my heart. Best wishes to you and yours.

I totally understand the feeling that you don't want the favor to be tossed into a landfill. Depending on the level of formality you could do what we've decided to do. Purchase mason jar drinking mugs and do glass etching with a stencil (of your oak tree/leaf) The etching solution cost me about $30 at Michaels and the mason jars are going to come in at $200 after shipping for 7 dozen. The other plus is that we don't have to rent glasses for the reception. I know my family will love them. You have to think long and hard about what your family will appreciate and more importantly use.

You can incorporate the tree design or leaves into ANY favors with a trip to your local scrapbooking store or online - you wouldn't beleive the variety of embellishment available!

However, I really like the idea of seedlings, guests could plant them on their own property or in their neighborhoods and parks. You could also offer (by announcement at the reception) to donate any seedlings left over to your local parks or highway beautification departments.

Peat pots are very inexpensive (about $2 per dozen) and easily covered and decorated with any paper or fabric you prefer - AND, all your guests need to do is remove the wrapping, the pot is planted right along with the seedling and provides it with additional nutrients as it decomposes.

You could even include a small charm or name plate with your initials and the date for attaching when the tree grows a bit.

If you have seeds, how wonderful and symbolic to start them together before giving them to your guests.
