My ring is turning colors... :(

ShaTerra, on February 3, 2012 at 3:26 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 25

I've been engaged for almost a year now. I've just noticed that my ring is starting to change colors. It started out silver with gold lining. Now its turning all silver. I've showed FH because I wasn't sure if it was just the lighting or my eyes. And all he said is that he hopes he didn't get jipped because he got it from a well known department store. I don't think he would have did it purposely but I don't know how to go about seeing if its just tarnished and needs to be cleaned or if the ring is not actually real. FH doesn't wear jewelry so he honestly wouldn't know if he was sold a dream or not. Any help you can lend on what I can do to check it out and how to tell him in a nice way if I find out that its not real so it doesn't crush his ego?

I'd either go back to the department store or to a jeweler to ask them what's going on.

What type of metal is your ring supposed to be?

If he just got you a silver ring, it will tarnsh and turn colors unless you keep it really clean all the time. That is why most rings are made with gold or other metals, so that your ring doesn't turn colors. Just FYI, I'm not knocking your ring or anything, I happen to prefer silver over gold myself, just offering you facts.

I would have a jeweler look at it...and about not crushing his ego? Just tell him sweetly that you know it wasnt his fault and you want to go about fixing the problem that the department store created for you two. Im sure he'd understand that if its not real, you would like to replace this ring which should have no reflection on him but reflect on the quality of the department store.

My ring is white gold. It started turning yellow after a year, which is totally normal. White gold is basically yellow gold that's dipped in rhodium, and based on your body chemistry it usually needs to be redipped once or twice a year to maintain its white color.

I don't know why a gold color would be turning to silver though, unless it was gold plated silver. You could maybe have it replated?

Definitely go back to the store where it was purchased and ask them. Does your FH have any paperwork on the ring? Is there a warranty? Rhodium plating 2x a year is covered by the warranty FH got from his jeweler.

What is the gold marking on the inside of your ring?

In other countries a slightly different type of marking is used on jewelry. These markings are as follows:

    Gold Markings: 6k=250, 8k=333, 9k=375, 10k=417, 12k=500, 14k=585, 18k=750, 22k=916, 24k=999

The 14k stamp represents the amount of gold in the ring as opposed to the alloys added for manufacturing stength and integrity. 14k = 58.5% pure gold. The rest of the ring usually consists of silver, copper, and zinc. You may also see the stamp 585 which refers to the percentage of gold in the ring, but it also alerts you to the fact that your ring was probably manufactured in Europe. Essentially 14k = 585 = 58.5% pure gold. 18k = 75% pure gold.

I honestly don't know what type of metal it is. He didn't get the ring that I picked out when we initially went together and he got it out of state while he was away for training with his military unit. Thank you ladies for the insight and being nice. I'll have us go together and check it out!

Look on the inside of the ring. They should have stamped it with something. Can you read it?

I know with white gold your ring will start to tarnish

White gold rings don't tarnish. They are gold rings that are plated with rhodium, so they just need re-plating to get it to look like white gold again.

What do you mean by "not real"? Do you know what he thinks he bought?

White gold can start to look yellowish if you do not keep it clean. You can also have it dipped in rhodium yearly to help.

I don't know. I was just happy he proposed. I don't even see a number on it. I'll have to go to a jeweler. I just don't want him to feel embarrassed or like its his fault. Maybe I just don't see it and maybe its just tarnished

Mine is 14k white gold, like others say it starts to lose the "white" and needs to be redippped. If you don't see anything on the inside of the band that's a different story.

Yeah, not having anything on the inside is not good news.

But if I understand it correctly, it's the yellow part that has turned silver, right? In other words, that's not the issue of white gold turning yellowish.

    Do you have a picture?

It's ok Shaterra...I don't think it really matters about how much a ring cost or where they got it. Don't be sad!

You can get it appraised fro about $75 at a jewelry store and they may be able to tell what metal it is and help you restore it to it's original beauty. My skin turns my white gold ring yellow every few months. It is due to the chemical make up of my skin and the type of lotion I use.

It's a beautiful ring! If it's worrying you, take it to the jeweler and see what they say. But in meantime just try to enjoy it :-)
