My new name won't match my name on my plane ticket.

Katelyn, on August 31, 2016 at 2:20 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 35

So I've been trying to research this some in my downtime at work and really I may have to end up calling southwest. I will be getting married next month and want to change my name right away, but my plane ticket for November has my old name on it. Am I able to change my name on the ticket? I'm sure this happens a lot with newly married people flying to their honeymoon. Has anyone went through this and what should I do?

Change it when you get back.

I think it's quite a fee to change the name on a plane ticket, no matter the reason. So either be willing to pay up or wait til after. What's the rush?

I haven't done this but I would just advise to just wait to change your name when you return from the November trip. You'll save yourself the headache! We married in January, immediately went on the HM but had plans already for a trip in April so I did t even change my name until May. It wasn't a big deal Smiley smile

You will likely be able to change it with the airline at no cost if you show your marriage license (United told me they could do this). BUT to be safe, you should just wait to change your name until after.

ETA: ok - maybe not, as PPs indicated. I asked United, but I actually did not have to go through this process since I booked in my maiden name and waited to change my name.

We got married April 30th, but because of our honeymoon and my frequent work travel, I was just able to change my name this month.

Don't change your name till you get back- trying to deal with the airlines will cause you a fuck load of headache- just leave it on there till you get back.

I changed my name already. I have tickets for both October and November in my married name. The airlines wanted to charge me to update it so I'll be flying with my passport, and THEN getting it renewed.

Since it's been less than a year between issue date and me changing my name it will be free to get an updated passport.

I just figured it was something that you were supposed to do right away. I'm fine with waiting, but does that cause any issues or extra fees for waiting a period of a few months to finally change it?

Just wait. Or bring your old ID with you.

Are you 100% sure that all of your new name will be on all of your legal documentation (i.e. driver's license, passport, any other identification)? If you are, then your best bet is to call the airline and be prepared to pay to change your name. It sucks, but I read that disclaimer on virtually every travel and airline site I looked at when we booked our honeymoon.

The other option is to wait until you get back from your honeymoon before you legally change your name.

Don't change your name until you get back. My cousin and her husband just went away for their 1 year anniversary and his name on ticket and name on passport were different (Jr. on passport vs no jr on ticket) my cousin called airline and told them the discrepancy and wondered if it mattered. They said it'd be $250 name change fee. She said no and figured they'd try their luck at the airport. It was a massive hassle trying to get through check in because it wouldn't let them do self check in with the Jr missing on the ticket. Airport almost didn't let them through at all.

I would wait to change your name. Even if you run out the week after your wedding, you might not receive your new ID (passport, social security card, and your drivers license) in time. There's no rush to legally change your name you can still refer to yourself by your new name!

There are no extra fees to wait and change your name. It is best to wait so that you can avoid a large fee to update everything with the airline.

No extra costs by waiting. Usually you have to wait for the marriage license anyway (I won't even have mine until 8 weeks after my wedding).

I was just thinking about this the other day. I just registered to take the LSAT in December and I realized AFTER I paid that I used my current last name! I'm just going to wait to get my new ID until after the holidays this year. I think I can still change with Social Security and therefore with work and my bank and stuff without getting my new driver's license, but if not I'll just wait to legally change my name until after December.

Alrighty guys thanks. I guess I was just excited to change it then I remembered I had my ticket already. It seems like it is no big deal to wait a few months. I was worried that social security would give me trouble if it was too long after.

Wait and change it after!! Airlines make it incredibly difficult to change the name on your plane ticket, and the name on your ID has to match. Some airlines will even charge you to change your name!

You also might not have enough time to finish legally changing your name in between the wedding and your honeymoon (first you need your certified marriage license, then change your social security card, then change your license), so save yourself the huge headache and wait!

I'm getting married in January and recently bought plane tickets for April... I'm waiting until after our April trip to change my name.

I did this once. I called Delta, told her I needed a different name on my ticket, and she changed it in ten second over the phone. She said as long as my ID matched the ticket it was fine--they didn't care about changing the name on the ticket at all.

I'm not saying every airline will be that accommodating but it was a piece of cake through Delta, four years ago.
