First take a breath and congrats on your engagement!! I recommend starting with a bit if research into what goes into a wedding and what things cost in your area. From there you can make a budget of what your dream wedding is likely to cost and then a budget based on what you are able/willing to spend on a wedding (I find it really helps with budget creep to go through this exercise). Here’s some resources to get you started:

Welcome Norma! Check out the checklists above. When you’re ready, these big decisions will really help you & your partner with planning: 1) set a budget, 2) estimate your guest list, 3) choose a venue.

Other decisions become easier once you got these down. 😊

Hi Norma! Welcome to the WeddingWire community and CONGRATULATIONS on your engagement!

There is no need to worry about planning your wedding, I know it seems daunting but for a lot of women in the community, it is their first time planning a wedding also.

As the pp’s mentioned, the first thing you should think about is your budget. It’s important to stay realistic with what you and your SO can afford. Also researching what wedding cost in your area is a great idea, you will get an idea of what the average wedding costs in your location and go from there.

WeddingWire has a great Wedding Checklists for couples to help them stay on track so perhaps this would help you what are the things that need to be tackled first!

What’s most important right now is for you to enjoy your engagement!

Start with a budget! I can't stress this enough! Work with your finace and anyone else contributing money (such as parents) to determine how much you can comfortably spend. Then start doing some research on how much things in your area cost, and come up with a vision for your wedding making sure it can fit in your budget. Do you want a large wedding with lots of guests, or something smaller and more intimate? Casual or formal? Afternoon or evening? Some of these things might be affected by your budget. If you have a small budget, you probably aren't going to be able to afford a formal, seated dinner reception for 200+ guests. Then, start looking for a venue you like that fits your vision and secure your date.
