My diamond fell off my RING!!!!!!!

Some of the suggestions here may be the top of line suggestions, but come on get real. I'm a lot older than most of you gals on here. So I've had plenty of time to deal with rings and quite a few diamonds & such. Sleeping, washing your hands, showering, washing your hair, is all normal wear & tear - so to speak. ANY ring and diamond SHOULD & BETTER be able to with stand ANY & ALL of this EVERY day!!! You should get the setting checked every 6 months. You should have insurance on it for LOST & STOLEN above & beyond what you paid - just in case the cost of gold/diamonds goes up. Depending on the cut of your diamond depends on how many prongs you need holding it in. You can be as careful with it as you like and still break prongs, or you can be as hard on it as you want and not break any. And believe me I want nothing to happen to my ring either, yet it comes off for NOTHING and I mean NOTHING, cooking, baking, painting, landscaping - you name it - it does not come off - PERIOD!!! And in my 30 years of wearing diamonds, I have only broken prongs once, never lost a diamond. Jewelry is meant to be worn and noticed, not be babied.

@ Kimm P I'm glad to hear that your ring has held up well all of these years but I've seen plenty that haven't. Rings that had diamonds falling out of the sides in the cleaner because previously all that was holding them in was lotion buildup and prongs pulled every which way because they got caught in bed sheets. Jewelry is absolutely meant to be worn and shown off but who is really looking at your ring when you're sleeping, doing yardwork or cooking? You're equally engaged or married if its off for a few minutes.

@Rosely I would definitely look into having a head with additional prongs put on your setting. Having just 2 prongs means that if one gets bent back even slightly you're at risk for your stone popping out. I hope your jeweler can find a solution for you that will put your mind at ease for wearing your ring

i have a Verragio Classico 8048 but I haven't had any problems with mine. Thank Goodness. I have 4 prongs holding my diamond. I don't have insurance merely because I've been lazy in getting it, but I really do need to look into that, just in case. It did cost quite a bit and if anything happened to it, I'd die....I don't sleep with my ring on and I take it off most of the time to wash my hands, but not at work. sometimes on the weekend when i wake up if i'm staying at home I don't put it on. but if I go out then I will.

does anyone know how long after we purchase ther ring can we get insurance and/if we need a dated apprasial or how insuring it works?

I keep an eye on mine. My diamond sits higher than I'm used to, so I hit it on a lot of things. My insurance company allowed me to add it to my policy (homeowners). I also had a girlfriend recently that had a loose diamond in her wedding ring, so I checked mine and it was wiggly!!! I took it RIGHT in....I just got it back today after two weeks ! But it's secured!

Oh man, I am so glad you were able to find your diamond!!!!! What type of setting do you have? How long have you had it?

My FS got the full insurance coverage through Jeweler Mutual, and it's covered in case of loss. And if I were you, I would look into that, it protects the setting and the diamond. Also have your prongs checked at least once a year.

@ Future Mrs. Cooper depending on the cost of your ring you may be able to use just a receipt from purchase to add it to an insurance policy but all companies are different. Honestly I would get an appraisal even if they don't require it, rings are often appraised at more then you paid for them because the markup in jewelry is outrageous! There shouldn't be any time restrictions on insuring it, however there generally is a time restriction on adding a warranty through the jewelry store.

Oh, I already gave the receipt to the insurance company, but I want replacement cost, so I will be getting an appraisal soon !!! Thanks Katie!

Oh wow! That is horrible!!! I'm so glad you found the diamond! The odds of you finding the stone after it fell out, especially in public, are so small.... do you have insurance on the ring? After getting it fixed (of course), I would seriously consider insuring your ring- you'll need your GIA certificate to do so, add it on to a homeowners policy (what I did) or get a stand-alone policy (I think but am not sure that the company for that is Jewelers Mutual, just Google engagement ring insurance).

Receipts alone are not adequate for insurance purposes.. they only show what you paid (which could be more/less than the actual value of the diamond) and not the value/characteristics of the diamond & setting. Also, I have 6 prongs, always better than 4. Could you take it to a reputable jeweler/preferably the one you bought it from (be careful they don't switch your diamond if you take it elsewhere- that happened to my mom when she had hers resized which she didn't discover til years later) & have it reset?

Wow! Im so glad you found it! Could you maybe get a platinum setting so its more secure? Mine is and it feels very tight, its also a low setting so I dont hit it in things.
