My Dad can't dance with me so should I get a substitute?

Stacy, on May 24, 2013 at 5:10 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 14

My dad had a stroke 4 years ago and has been unable to walk or stand without a walker. He will not be able to dance with me for the father daughter dance. Should I dance with my brother instead, my fiance's father, my fiance's step-father or just play a song dedicated to my dad and open the floor for everyone? Any advice?

Can you do something with him on the walker? If he needs support, can he walk up to you, use you for support, and just middle school slow dance? How important is it to you that you have this moment? Maybe you could put two chairs out, and do a chair dance! Get creative, and you and your dad could still have a father daughter dance. I agree with Sumer R...

But if not with your father, I would keep it in the family and dance with your brother.

Have you talked to your dad about what he would prefer? If I was your dad, I would be upset for you to even think about dancing with anyone but me (like the other ladies mentioned, there are ways it could work). But if your dad is the type that wouldn't want to dance in a walker, then you need to be respectful of that and at that point it's your decision if you want to dance with a substitute, but make sure it'll mean something to you.

I agree with maybe using the brother so that he doesn't feel "replaced" as such. I don't know your father and I am not saying he will feel that way but I'm sure he'll be wishing he was able to dance with you

Look up on YouTube the father/daughter wheelchair dance, it's very beautiful. Could you do something like that?

Just don't do it. I didn't do the Father/daughter dance just because we didn't feel like it.

use that time to maybe let your dad give a speech or you and DH speak and thank everyone for coming

I like the idea of dedicating a song to him and then opening the dance floor, is there a way to show a slide show maybe with photos of you and him growing up?

I think he would be embarrassed if he was in his wheelchair at my wedding. He's going to walk me down the aisle holding his cane which it's a short aisle so that should work out well. Unfortunately we don't have any pictures together from when I was growing up.

My dad passed away so I'm dancing with my mom. For what it's worth I would give anything to dance with my dad, even if it meant just standing there swaying. You could ask your dad what he has in mind?

I know it didn't stop her but my dad will not dance with me in his wheelchair. I already asked him. I think he will be okay with me dancing with my brother but I'm not sure if my brother will do it.

I would say if you and your dad can't dance at all, dance with your brother.
