My bridesmaid just found out that she's pregnant!

Private User, on February 16, 2016 at 4:12 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 40

I am so excited for her! She and her husband had such a hard time getting pregnant with their last child, and it was a pretty rough experience for them both. So she’s kind of in shock that she’s pregnant since they weren’t even trying, but she and her husband are very happy.

Her bridesmaid dress just came in last week, which she was measured for on 11/28/15. She found out today that she is pregnant. She is pretty worried about whether or not her dress will fit her by the wedding—May 21, 2016.

I don’t think we could order the dress in a different size in time. Attached is a picture of the dress. It’s long and flowy, but the bodice is a little more fitted. (Hers is the pale blue dress.) Should we be worried about this? We're not really sure what to do.

I have no idea if this would solve the problem, but could you turn the back of the dress into a corset for more give? There was another BM in a wedding I was in that had to do that b/c the dress that the bride chose did not go up to her size.

The dress looks like it still might work even if she's grown a bit. My good friend was able to exchange her dress in time before a wedding she was in. The bridal salon was very accommodating, she was about 5 months along.

I like BeachBride2016's idea. Maybe chat with a seamstress for ideas.

If that doesn't work, maybe she could get a non-BM dress at a department store? Who knows what her measurements will look like in May.

A good seamstress can work wonders. My first wedding BM was 7 months. Dress looked great.

@Beachbride2016 that's a great idea. I figured we might have to talk with a seamstress, but I really wasn't sure what options we had.

The dress was a little under $200 so I don't want her to have to buy another. Smiley sad I'm really hoping a seamstress can work some magic.

And yes, yay babies! FH and I are the godparents to her youngest (who will be a year old in March).

    Very exciting!

Can she return it? Even if it's just for credit and maybe she can get something closer to the wedding?

My FSIL will be 6 months pregnant and I'm hoping my BM who was married in October will also be pregnant Smiley smile I gave them pretty much free range on choosing a dress so all will work out.

One of my BMs was 7 months pregnant at my wedding. She had ordered her dress before she found out she was pregnant. We had gotten the dresses at DB. They let her exchange the dress for a bigger size (I think she ordered 2 sizes bigger). They even had a fake pregnant tummy for her to put on under the dress so they could see how the dress would fit. It doesn't hurt to ask about getting a bigger size. Or talk to a seamstress about adding extra fabric.

@ bridetobe - Sorry about your BM dropping out Smiley sad

One of my friends was in a wedding recently and was a couple months pregnant, and already showing. The BM dresses were very similar to the style in the picture, but her mom (a master seamstress) did some magic to make it fit nicely. She ended up turning it into a more true empire waisted dress.

I agree with the PP - maybe wait a bit to see if she's able to find something in that same color closer to the date when she knows how much she'll be showing! How exciting for her though!

@Ruth - That's hilarious that DB has a fake preggo tummy for BMs to try on under dresses!!

I would say to get a fake baby belly. You know the ones you can use at the maternity stores? Have her get one that is a 4 month sized one(to overestimate) and see if the dress fits. That way you'll know for sure if you have to do something. I honestly think though that the style will fit her perfectly fine at 3ish months Smiley smile

We'll definitely give the store a call. It would be awesome if they could order her a new size in time. I was thinking since it took this one so long to get here that it might not be possible. But we'll check!

She may be ok with that dress...looks like it has a higher waist which will work in her favor. Alterations might be a bit pricey, but find a good seamstress and they should be able to do something. I had a BM that purchased her dress and then got pregnant as well...she was about 5 months at the wedding and the dress looked great on her. She took it to a good tailor in her area a couple of months before the wedding and they took a look at it. The seamstress got her on her calendar and told her to come back a week before she needed to wear the dress and they'd work something out. Her belly had grown ALOT, lol, but they were able to make it work. Again though, the style of the dress we chose helped alot as well so that was just dumb luck Smiley smile

She might not have that big of a belly, so I don't think I'd stress too much about it! Smiley smile

    Congrats to her!!

She'll be what, somewhere around 3-4 months at the time of your wedding? I'm just about 4 months along now and I'm still (pretty much) fitting in all of my clothes. It's just my pants that are just now getting too tight. It's all going to depend on her body- some women start showing much sooner than others, some women go up a cup size or two in the first trimester, some don't even look pregnant until they hit 5 or 6 months.

If she can exchange it for a bigger size, that might be the safest option, then she can have it altered to fit. Even if she can't, though, a good seamstress should be able to help! Usually you can let a dress out at least one size up. And if there's a back zipper a corset back could help a ton! the boob issue might be a bigger deal than the belly, so she might need to look into getting straps sewn in.

    And congrats to your friend!

Spazzy rocks. Thank you for saying what I bet a lot of us were thinking!

That's so exciting about your friend! It looks like it could still work just fine. I like the idea of the corset back too and would absolutely have a chat with a good seamstress now about options. The good thing is that the dress looks pretty forgiving. Where does that waist band sit? If it's a high-waisted dress then all the better!

Do you know how many weeks she is? Is she past the safe-zone yet?
