Must-have dance songs?

KimS, on April 18, 2014 at 9:39 AM Posted in Planning 0 21

For those of you having a DJ/iPod/band at your reception, what are your "must haves" - songs you know will get the dance floor jumping. Also, any tunes that you absolutely refuse to have played - Chicken dance, anyone? LOL!

I've banned the chicken dance and the macarena.... my future in laws are apparently stuck in some crappy dance music time warp, so even though my wedding is a year away, the "banned" list is already started.

Banning macarana. Giving in on chicken dance. If you have a DJ or good dancer to lead the wobble or electric slide always get people of all ages up

I'm definitely banning Macarena. Haha! I was just listening to Footloose this morning, for nostalgia's sake, and that song had me bouncing around so it just got me thinking what other songs might be fun like that - not just necessarily songs that require choreographed moves.

Line dance songs usually get everybody up so the electric slide, Cupid shuffle, cha cha slide, and the wobble will all be must haves. Buy the looks of every freaking Four weddings episode I see the wobble must be on everybody's must have list cause they always show everyone doing it at the reception.

@KimS - I love Footloose! And I know I want some Bon Jovi played too Smiley smile I was thinking of adding a line on the RSVP cards that say "What song is most likely to get you on the dance floor?" and having them request it.

Chicken Dance and Hokey Pokey are banned - however there WILL be polkas, because I'm in Wisconsin. Plus, many of my guests actually know how to polka! FH's uncle asked me to dance at a wedding a few years ago because his wife had broken her foot and FH refused to polka with me -and he told FH that he'll dance with me again at our wedding :]

Macarena is also banned. FH wanted to ban ALL those types of songs but I did manage to get Cupid Shuffle (one of my best friends and I dance around to that song so she begged me to play it), and I'm working on the Wobble because some of my friends can lead it!

@Mrs. Chanel - I had never even seen the Wobble until a few months ago at my friend's 50th birthday party. I definitely wobbled, though maybe not like it's supposed to be. Haha!

@Laura - We're definitely doing that! On our website (if I ever get it finished), we'll also have a page for song requests.

@DanieGee - where in WI? Polkas would actually be a whole lotta fun. Smiley smile We love 40s music, but do not know how to do any of the appropriate dances - jitterbug, etc.

Our must haves: Wagon Wheel, Sweet Caroline, Sunny & 75, Kathleen by Josh Ritter (not that well known)

Our no ways - ANY GROUP DANCES! - I put that on the DJ list, lol. FH got a kick out of it.

Oh I did! It actually had the group dance section crossed out with NO GROUP DANCES!!! In all caps. I just really don't like group dances except for line dancing and even that isn't my favorite.

Definitely Cha Cha slide , wobble, and Cupid shuffle! Also throwing in blurred lines, and some justin timberlake. One thing I know I'll be doing at my reception is dancing!

We did our own playlist, and these songs always get people going:

    Men Without Hats, Safety Dance

    New Order, Regret
Jackson 5, I Want You Back
    When In Rome, The Promise
    Bee Gees, Jive Talkin
Bon Jovi, Livin' on a Prayer (save this one for when everybody's tipsy enough to rock out and sing along)
    Erasure, A Little Respect
    Mary J Blige, Family Affair
    Justin Timberlake, Rock Your Body

I find it's best to start with some oldies/stuff everyone knows to fill up the floor, then mix in other genres over the course of the evening. Some songs I think are Gen Xer-specific (such as Erasure and New Order).

I put a bunch of fun dance songs also including JT. Love him and "This I promise you" is our song. I also wanted a couple boy band songs for my friends who have been around since the 90s to dance and remember high school to.

On my do not play list is "The Electric Slide". I can't stand it. I requested on 2-3 line dance songs. I'm not a big fan of them, but they do get people out of their seats.
