Music for Wedding Dinner Party - violin or guitar?

Monica, on January 5, 2018 at 1:12 PM Posted in Parties and Events 0 5

Our wedding will be a 4-hr Sunday afternoon affair in late January, taking place mostly outside at a Brooklyn restaurant (Frankie's). There will be a ceremony, followed by a 45-min cocktail reception, seated dinner family style, and dessert in the garden area. There will be no dancing, although we are considering a first dance. We'll have about 75 guests.

We're trying to figure out what music makes the most sense - violin/cello or guitar/singer. Given our budget, we can likely only have one musician, and given the venue, it needs to be acoustic style. Violin seems to be beautiful for the ceremony/cocktails. Personally, I get mushy inside with male guitars who sound like girls when they sing (I'm told this is tenor), my fiance prefers baritone. We also have the option to play Spotify.

Of course its subjective, but would love input on what sort of musician seems best suited for this sort of event. If its a guitarist/singer, we'll have to agree on a vocal sound! Thanks for your input!

I think both are beautiful for a ceremony. Whether you go with a violin/cello or a singer/guitar it's really going to depend on the tone you want the music to set. The singer/guitar will have a bit more flexibility in musical styles than the violin/cello.

I will say for the cocktail portion, you're not really going to hear whomever is performing with 75 people talking at once. Only those that will be standing closest to the musician will really be able to hear it. We put together a play list on our phone and had that play during our reception. That way we weren't paying for something we really weren't getting a lot of value from.

Violin or cello!!! But I’m a violinist and my fiancé is a cellist so I’m a little biased. 😊 if you want a singer of course guitar would be the best option, but if you’re just looking for beautiful background music, I always think strings (violin/cello for solo instruments) are the way to go.

It's a Sunday afternoon in late June. We're thinking of having both... if we can make it work with our budget.
