Multiple dress colors or different dresses?!

CynthiaRay, on October 18, 2014 at 11:59 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 19

Even though we have some time until our wedding... I'm stressing because of my OCD controlling problems! I thought I wanted my wedding colors to be navy, coral and mint but now I'm concerned about the bridesmaids dresses.

My girls all have different skin tones, so some suggested to be in different colors but I'm scared that might look too sloppy but yet again I was thinking to put them in the same color and different styles. If I put them in different styles though I feel like that one color will be too boring.

Does anyone else have a 3 color pallete or more? What are you doing for your dresses and attire as well?

I am actually going shopping next Saturday for my girls dresses. I haven't talked to them about it yet, but I think id like them to be the same length, and material, with different styles on the top, and 3 different colors. A bride posted a picture on here last week of her wedding with my exact colors so I screenshot that and it's now my inspiration lol

With your colors I think maybe keep it to mint and navy, or navy and coral. Basically a darker and lighter color. I am using purple and the entire wedding will be different shades of purple so it kind of "goes"

Our colors are Eggplant, Greyed-Jade, and soft Peach. I am having my 2 BM in different dresses that are also different shades of purple. My MOH will be a dark purple (eggplant) which works because she is very fair toned, and my BM will be wearing more of a lavender, which works with her tanned skin. Their bouquets will be the same which will unify them, and the men will be wearing purple & green ties...Hope this helpsSmiley smile

I've seen a few bridal party pictures where the dresses were different shades of one color or all different pastels that looked really pretty. I personally wouldn't do the different color look, but I've recently opened up to the different dresses, same color look.

    Just to show you..

ETA: I know they aren't your colors, but just so you can see what different "colors" look like.

Some more pictures. The last one is one that I made today. I was looking for bridesmaid dresses in a plum color and was wondering if I would like the different dress look myself in all of the same color. Maybe look online for dresses and then make a collage to see what they would look like together like I did.

My colors are navy and charcoal grey, we are having accents of yellow. I have 8 BMs. 6 of my BMs are wearing the same short navy dress. My sister is my maid of honor, and she is wearing the same short dress in charcoal grey (its actually pewter, but still close). My matron of honor is wearing a long dress that is similar to the short dresses (they all are chiffon and have one strap) in charcoal (pewter).

We have the same colors! Smiley smile we're emphasizing the mint and navy, with coral pops in the flowers. The girls in my BP all are wearing mint dresses. Same color, different styles. Got them all from target.com and they're awesome!

If you want to give them multiple color options, maybe decide on two of your colors, then let the girls pick their color dress with accessories of the other color? That way they all tie in together. I think mint, navy, and coral are too contrasting or colors to really get away with letting them pick any of the three colors without finding a way to tie them all in.

I'm personally not a fan of different colors but I was at a wedding a couple weeks ago and she used different shades of the same color and it was cute.

I'm personally doing all the same color, length, and fabric but everyone picked their own dress. I think it made everyone happy but will still look clean and united.

Megzie, I am thinking to do a lighter coral and then accent with navy probably so thank you Smiley smile it feels good to know I'm on the right track.

Just a BM suggested to do different colors and truthfully I don't think this is the right color pallette to do that. Unless I had colors that Danielle posted or pastels that blend nicely but I feel like my colors are too bold for that. And thanks Danielle! I found a lot of those different color ideas on Pinterest as well and that's why I was leaning toward them but really thought I can't make it flow well unless I stick with one color and do different shades.

L + A, I totally agree! I really just wanted another opinion but it's great that you have the same colors and are keeping it with the mint and navy, then I know I'm not crazy with adding the coral too in other things throughout the day!

And Future Mrs Yocum, I think that different styles is a good way to keep everyone happy but make yourself happy as well! That way they are comfortable and you feel accomplished!

Thanks so much to all of you ladies! This really did help narrow down my choices!

I think if the different colors fit a "theme" it could work. I have also see same color/different styles pulled off nicely before.

I have 4 BM's with 2 different dresses, My color is navy blue so it mattered what fabric and manufacturer it came from. I ended up like this because my cousin and her daughter are too tall to wear the dress my friends are wearing, which does not come in extra length. They are similar dresses, and the girls will be adding thicker straps that the spaghetti straps it has with what they have taken off. All will have matching bling brooches on their dresses. I hope it works.

My wedding colors are navy, yellow and orange. I have 4 in my bridal party, including a jr. bridesmaid. They will all be wearing the same color (J. Crew dark cove) and material (silk chiffon), but in different styles. They will also all be knee length, not floor length dresses. I like the uniformity that it brings, especially with a smaller bridal party. I think multiple colors works best when you have 5 or more bridesmaids.

I have a naturally-blond, blue-eyed, 5'10" BM, and a 5'0 red-headed, hazel-eyed BM - they both looked great in multiple shades of pink, blue, and purple, so they chose the style, and will wear the same color.

Agree with Jennifer - unless you have a very large bridal party, one color is the way to go. With coral dresses, I couldn't find examples of navy sashes or jewelry but with navy or marine blue dresses, you can do a coral sash, a coral cropped cardigan, and coral and gold jewelry is pretty easy to find. If you google "coral bridesmaid dresses with navy accents", you get mostly navy dresses with coral accents, so I'd think about the whole look before you make a final decision... it's a lot easier to put a light colored sash (ivory on coral) on a dark dress, than a dark sash (navy) on a lighter dress (coral).

Thanks ladies! I love everyones ideas and opinions and especially what you are doing, really helps me narrow down what I want. I think once I start making my actual decisions everything will tie together!

@susan, thankfully most of my girls are the same height! But that is great that you're tying your girls together with a brooch!

@jennifer, unfortunately FH keeps changing his mind with his GM so it is making it hard for me to decide how many are truly going to be in our BP. Then on top of that I want my Juniors to match everyone else. SOOOO many decisions! but truthfully, how did you decide between knee and floor length? I've seen so many cute floor length ones that I am falling in love with but I just don't know what to do!

and @rebecca I totally agree with finding a dark dress and accenting it with lighter colors! it is so much easier and I think it looks a little bit more classy Smiley winking

I'm doing same color, length, material, but different styles to spice things up, LOL! I've been in 3 matchy-matchy weddings and I want to change it up now that it's my turn!

My "main" colors are coral and navy, but I'm using white as an accent color (if you consider white a color lol). My bridesmaids will be wearing alternating colors (I have 5 BMs), and the bouquets will incorporate all 3 colors. I am allowing them to choose whatever style of dress they want as long as they are the same length. Maybe you could have alternating color dresses and have them accessorize in the 3rd color, and make sure to also include that color in the bouquet? Here is an idea of alternating coral and navy dresses.

Cherry Red dresses, style was up to the bridemaid's choice. One of my bridesmaid's was worried because she wasn't able to get her dress ordered in time for the wedding, so she scoured different stores to find something in a similar color, I think they turned out pretty hot!

I had a similar issue since my colors are navy, silver and yellow but then a miracle happened and I found a dress that had a water color pattern with the color palate with a flattering cut that looked great on both of my bridesmaids! Whatever you pick will be beautiful. Good luck!
