Moody Spring Wedding-did a later ceremony time accentuate the look of the wedding?

Hi Brides! My fiancé and I have decided a ‘moody’ look for our wedding. Due to timing and our all-outdoor, wine country venue in Southern California our wedding will be in the spring although this style usually works best in Autumn or Winter. Has the timing of the event helped other couples pull off this look? I have found some inspiration for richly hued, moody spring wedding (Examples are attached to this message)! The palettes are grounded in a dark color like a evergreen green, navy, or black. Would it accentuate our wedding style to have the wedding ceremony at sunset so that the majority of the event occurs when it’s darker outside? What are the cons to having less time sunlight between the ceremony and cocktail hour/reception?

Photos! Honestly that's gonna be your biggest obstacle. If you want outdoor photos and no first look, that's what it will be.

I say that, as I'm having a late March wedding. Hoping to do photos around sunset myself. Crossing my fingers everything works out. 🤷‍♀️

Holly, I love this moody color palette! I would have chosen something similar if we didn’t go with a theme. Keep daytime because once it gets dark you won’t see these colors, everything will blend to dark! We had a March wedding in Napa, had first look at 2 pm, outdoor ceremony at 4 pm, then an indoor reception.

Which winery are you choosing? We had a local reception at Monte De Oro in Temecula. Are you aware there are no leaves on the vines until late May/June? Our reception was June 10 and the vines were pretty good but July/Aug (very hot there) would have been perfect for vineyard photos.

You should look at sunset times online - you can plug in your location and date and get an idea of when sunset will be. If that time seems at a reasonable hour, you can plan your ceremony a bit before sunset and then dinner should fall around sunset or a bit after, for that darker, moody look. Our wedding is in late May in the northeast and the days are quite long then, so if we tried to wait for sunset we'd be having a very late night.

Also keep in mind a lot of that "look" is photo processing. Some of it is definitely light, but editing makes a huge difference. You'll want to be very clear about what vibe you are going for when you hire your photographer. You can also ask them for insight about timing if that is the look you are going for - photographers know how light works better than most.

Love the moody looks! I would say you probably would benefit from a later time to help with your moody vibes! In addition I would definitely suggest looking for photographers who shoots with a lot of moody vibes year round. This was the toughest thing for me to find, i swear it’s like all wedding photographers standard is bright colors and contrasts, but I finally found someone who pulls off the moody photos and I think that will be important for you so that your photos have the same vibe you’re going for! Best of luck planning!

This looks so stunning!!! i would say it will depend on what you want for your photos. i would try to do those all before sunset and maybe have reception start around sunset? that way your theme for the reception fits in with the right "mood" of the day.

Hi, I took a look at your profile and I love the creativity! Our wedding is actually at a garden in wine country, so we’ll do without the vines. Thanks for the advice! We are keeping the daytime ceremony.

    Thanks for the input, everyone!
We looked at the historical weather patterns, and it turns out early March in Temecula tends to be overcast! It totally makes sense our coordinator suggested March over April for our ‘moody’ Spring wedding look. We’re keeping our plans for a [hopefully a little] cloudy afternoon ceremony.

Thank you! The themes were very “us.”

Oh good. Glad you’ll keep the daytime wedding and a garden wedding will be gorgeous.
