Money Tree..

KNB2016, on June 24, 2016 at 8:18 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 22

I'm sure this has been asked but I can't search on the app.

My FMIL is insisting we have a money tree at our shower and wedding. I HATE this idea. I feel like it's so tacky and I can't even think of a way to make it look decent. She insists that its traditional and we should have it. She's actually the second person in the family to suggest this.

Has anyone else had one? I already have a card box which I think is perfectly fine and not tacky.

(If you did do a money tree don't be offended please I just don't want my guests to feel obligated to give us money.)

I don't think you'll find anyone on here that will find this offensive.

on that note, you are right, it's totally tacky. It screams, hey look at all this money on display from everyone, so you should give me some to add to it. Kind of like a dollar dance. The guests already gave you something off your registry at a shower probably and they probably gave you a card with money/check (at least that's how I do it/family does it around me). So to then have to give MORE money is just ick

That's what I'm thinking. I already have a card box so why would we need anything else. They also suggested a dollar dance which I'm not comfortable with either.

It kinda reminds me of one of those buttons that you clip dollars to for someone's birthday..tacky and awkward.

I feel like the only people that should be dancing for dollars are strippers.

Nope, not appropriate. Another beg for money.

My mom is insisting a dollar dance is "traditional" for a wedding (not for cultural reasons...just for wedding reasons). Absolutely no way that is happening. You are right- stick to your guns! I have a hard time saying no, but you can just say no Smiley smile

I wouldn't do it. If she brings it up again you can say "we're not doing one-(subject change)", or "we'll think about it (and then think about how you're not doing one for 15 seconds)."

The only reason we're doing a dollar dance is for charity (two, in fact). Unless it's for charity, I wouldn't do it.....

@Alyssa long story short she offered to pay for all of our alcohol at the wedding but she's a drunk and causes a scene when she drinks (pulled a machete on us last time) and so we told her that the venue didn't allow it so we wouldn't hurt her feelings

Anything where you ask for money is tacky. Please don't have a money tree or a dollar dance.

    Also, turned down alcohol? What?

ETA: If she's really a drunk, she'll find a way to have alcohol anyways. Properly host your guests and have the alcohol. The bartender will know when to cut her off.

A dollar dance - even for charity - still makes me cringe.

And she's right about the alcohol, but not the money tree. The money tree is garbage.

FH and I are also under 21 and a lot of our guests are under 21 so I didn't want to have to monitor everyone (people go crazy for free booze) and worry about them driving home ect.

Dollar dances even for charity are in bad taste. Your Mom is right about serving alcohol. A good bartender will know when to cut her off.

I'm sure the guests who are over 21 would really appreciate at least beer and wine. You don't have to monitor them. Trust them to take care of themselves.
