Mom/bridal Party out of state - where to buy the wedding dress?!

Jennifer, on July 1, 2019 at 1:22 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 9

I'd love some advice! My mom and bridal party (particularly my maid of honor) live out of state from me/where the wedding will be. My options are asking a few of them to fly down to help me pick out the dress or for me to fly up closer to them and buy it up there. I'm nervous about making the trip/asking others to make the trip and then I don't find a dress. I'm also concerned about buying a dress out of state and dealing with shipping/alterations.

Has anyone experienced this dilemma? What did you do?

I was lucky that my mom flew out and we went dress shopping. I think asking a lot of people to fly out and go dress shopping with you is a bit much. You have a couple options:
    - you can see if your mom is able to fly out and you go dress shopping. Set up a full day and you’ll probably find something
    - you could fly to go shopping with all your girls. And the actually purchase your dress at a shop close to home. If you go with someplace like a David’s Bridal you could even buy the dress with your girls and have it sent to a store closer to you

I live in and got married in California but my family and most of my friends are in Texas. I found a wedding dress in Texas and had no issues with them shipping it to me and finding a local alterations person.

I went dress shopping with just my mom in Colorado, she flew out to do that with me. All my bridesmaids were out of town/out of state. Our wedding is in Colorado though.

I had the exact same issue. My mom and all my bridesmaids live in a separate state than me. My original plan was to fly over for a separate event obligation and try on dresses while there with them, with no desire to purchase.. but then I found MY dress and the price was too good to resist! So, I purchased it and actually had it mailed to my house as I felt it was safer (and paid extra for insurance) then trying to fly back with it. I bought from David's Bridal, so I do still have the alterations, but am choosing not to use them and will go with someone more affordable.

The hardest part so far has been wanting to start the alterations.. I literally have no one here (aside from my FH family, who I don't know overly well), so going to alterations alone has been kind of difficult and I keep putting this off.

I'm in Missouri (where the wedding is), but my MOH/BMs are spread out across the Midwest (everyone lives 4-6 hours away) and I didn't want to add to their obligations. I just went with my mom and aunt (who are both local), and my mom texted pictures to my sister (MOH) while we were there.

If you use a David's bridal you can fly to them and go shopping then have the dress shipped to the one near you. It'd probably save a lot of time for all of you

My mom and sister/MOH still live in Wisconsin where I grew up, but I now live in North Carolina. I went back to WI a few times last year, and scheduled some dress shopping when I was there and I ended up finding a dress at local boutique. I scheduled my fitting with them for the next time I am back in WI, and I am planning to fly back to NC with it a month or two before the wedding. I am planning to contact the airline beforehand to see if I need to make special accommodations.
