Moissanite vs White Sapphire vs Diamond??

Rachel , on October 20, 2017 at 2:20 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 39

Hey ladies! What are your thoughts and experiences with different stones for an engagement ring? Because of the ethics and price of diamond, I'd love to get a different stone. Does anyone know pros and cons of moissanite or white sapphire??

LOVE my moissanite. Super sparkly and everything I wanted in a ring. MoissaniteCo.com was perfect. My band is also moissanite, I will post a pic.

Question: for those of you who have a stone other than a diamond that still looks like a diamond (like a moissanite or white sapphire) do you tell people that its not a diamond or just let them assume it is? For example if someone says "OMG that rock is huge! Good for you girl!" Do you tell them its not actually a diamond...? jw.

I absolutely love my moissanite! I went with a moissanite because they are close to being as strong as diamond so they will hold up over time.

My fiance gave me a moisanite ring from Charles and colvard and I couldn't be more thrilled. People are constantly complimenting it and almkost every one I know (except for my best friend who works for a jeweler) could not tell it wasn't a diamond. I love bragging about it because it feels so good to have a gorgeous huge stone that not only cost less but did not have any ethical draw backs!

    Hey @LB!

My ring is a pink sapphire surrounded by diamonds. One time, a friend called my center stone a pink diamond, and I corrected her. I wouldn't lie about it, seems so silly, ya know? But I do know some people who wouldn't correct someone because they're embarrassed or they just want people to think they have an expensive ass diamond on their hand. No shame in our game - H couldn't afford a diamond this size. We are realistic about that.

Moissanite has a more similar refraction pattern to a diamond so it has the most similar sparkle however it does seem to refract more yellow and green than a typical diamond. Moissanite have really great "toughness" and hold up well to every day wear. Honestly, only a trained jewelry professional would be able to tell a moissy from a diamond.

White sapphires don't refract light in a pattern in anyway similar to a diamond. They are much more evident to be different from a diamond, even to the naked idea. White sapphires do have great hardness and hold up to every day wear and tear very well. They don't really burnish too bad over time and you may only need to get it recut in like 25 years or so. White sapphires do cloud easily. White sapphires will cloud over due to being dirty, excess heat (like welding level heat, not daily cooking heat), or contact with corrosive chemicals like pool water chlorine or cleaning materials.

    Hope this helps!

@Gymmie, your ring is fucking gorgeous! Agree with you though, I feel like a lot of people get these white stones because they are purposely trying to pass it off as a big ass diamond. Of course not everyone, but it def seems to be a common motive...

ETA: both MrsBdeG and Stephanie's comments kinda make the point. Only jewelers can tell the difference, ie you are trying to pass it off as something its not...

@JK what is the difference between buying a small, budget/ecofriendly conflict-free diamond and a moissanite ring though?

I currently have a white sapphire and sterling silver ring that FH got as a "temporary" ring. The ring itself gets dirty but I think it's mostly silver tarnishing. At times the white sapphire is extremely sparkly, mostly after I clean it. It collected A LOT of dirt over the past 3 years. Some of the smaller stones fell out, but again, I think that's because it was cheap.

That being said, my "upgrade" ring I asked FH for it to be moissanite. It's tougher than the stones I have now and will sparkle much more. Moissanite is more than a white sapphire, but if you have the funds, I'd go for it. Overall though, if you have a good metal and clean your ring well, white sapphires aren't terrible

@JK Definitely no shame in going another route. Its only when people pass it off that it makes me feel "icky" I guess. You, @KDU, and @Gymmie are doing it the right way. People shouldn't be shamed and lie about it. If you have a non-diamond, own it IMO.

I personally REALLY wanted a moissanite instead of a diamond. I think the cost of a diamond is absurd, and for ethical reasons, I just preferred not to have one.

His family insisted I have a real diamond, because everyone else in the family has a real diamond. So, I have a real diamond.

I do love my ring, he did a phenomenal job picking it out. We do both now think it would have been a better decision to go with a moissanite. They're beautiful, strong, sparkly, less expensive, more environmentally friendly, and it's a great affordable way to have the ring of your dreams. I just think they're so cool!

Another option is lab grown diamonds.

I don't think it's wrong for anyone to buy a diamond. I personally felt that for me even buying a conflict free diamond was supporting the diamond business in general. My friends that chose alternative stones over conflict free stones did so to not support the popularity of diamonds. They are, after all not rare. But you could also argue that buying conflict free is helping the conflict free sector get bigger and discourages conflict based diamonds. I think whatever works for the couple.

I've never thought so deeply about it until reading through these comments, but @JK your ring is amazing!!! Love it! I've honestly never heard of Moissanite. Very pretty.
