Modest Dress for one bridesmaid

Happy In Hawaii, on August 5, 2013 at 10:01 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 14

I still have a while but I'm wondering if others have dealt with this issue. One of my bridesmaids is mormon and they are required to wear undergarments that have high backs and cap sleeves so I need to find something that will cover those areas. However, none of my other bridesmaids require that so I thought I could have each wear a different style dress, that way she wouldn't stand out too much as the only one wearing something different. But I want the colors to be the exact same. Does anyone know where I could find dresses with the cap sleeves and high back that also have other styles in the same color? I don't want her to wear a sweater or a bolero since it is a summer (and tropical themed) wedding. I want knee length dresses that are under $200. Or if anyone knows of a place where I could buy a dress just with a bit of extra fabric to add sleeves that would be great. Thanks!

Welcome to WW, Laurie!! Have you looked at the dresses at David's Bridal or Alfred Angelo? They offer a large variety of dress styles in matching colors, many in the price range you are looking at. Dessy Group also is an option, their BM dresses are sold at various shops, you'd have to look on their website to find shops near you.

You can also try convertible dresses, there's quite a few Etsy shops that sell them. Each girl can wear it in whatever style they'd like, including cap sleeves, and you can get matching bandeau tops to cover her back.

I hope you'll stick around and update that avatar (the rings) to ANY unique picture from Google we can remember you by! This post tells you how and more: https://www.weddingwire.com/wedding-forums/welcome-to-the-weddingwire-forums-please-read-if-you-are-new/b433c40c1a62b96a.html

I am having a similar issue, where one of my bridesmaids would prefer to be covered (not for religious reasons or anything, just preference) and I've found in my search that most places will let you order extra fabric with the dress and make some type of sleeve or something when you bring it for alterations. I'd go look ahead of time and tell the people at the shop your situation, they can be very helpful.

Hey Laurie, try the After Six line at Dessy; my church requires shoulders to be covered and they have quite a few dresses in that line. I wasn't a big fan of working with David's Bridal based on their customer service reviews, but they can add sleeves to some of their dresses.

Oops, sorry, I meant the Alfred Sung line by Dessy, not After Six.

Thanks so much for all of the recommendations so far. I have already looked through David's Bridal and a few others as I was looking for wedding dresses but so far every place has either a low back, a low front, or sleeves that they say are cap sleeves but really don't cover enough (or are see through). I'll definitely check out some of these and let you know what I find!

I'm not sure if this company is too expensive, but they seem to offer a couple that meet your criteria. I loved the dresses, but the cost made me choose Alfred Angelo instead. If not pictured, some of their dresses come with different sleeve options, etc.

Otherwise eShakti makes custom dresses (as in custom size, length, and sleeve choices based on a designed dress). They're not too expensive and I have one dress from them that I love made to my specifications. I plan on ordering more.

If that fails, check out Shabby Apple. They are LDS run (at least that' s what I've heard) and therefore they offer LDS appropriate clothes (though not always). They're not a wedding vendor (neither is eShakti actually), but they have cute dresses. I have one from them. I'm not LDS (though my extended family is), but I love vintage inspired clothes.

Oh, I forgot to mention. One of my BMs got pregnant just after they placed their orders from Alfred Angelo. She was six months pregnant at the wedding (they ordered early). I ordered extra fabric ($20) and she had her dress altered to fit her. It was from the same dye lot. It's totally doable.

Hi Laurie, I have a Mormon bridesmaid too! I told the girls that they could pick any dress around knee-length in David's Bridal peacock. Well, they all liked the same one, and it comes up to a point in front and then goes back over their shoulders--it doesnt have sleeves, but she looked at jackets at the same time. They didn't have any in the right color and fabric, so she took it back to DB to see if they could put sleeves on it, and they said they can't, so her mom is making her a little jacket with short sleeves. I'm getting married in August so hopefully it won't be too hot, but she wanted to wear the same dress as the other girls, so that's what we're doing! In addition to what other ladies have said, you could try looking online for modest dress stores, I know my friend has bought them for events before and there are stores that carry wedding gowns that are modest, I'd imagine they also have bridesmaid dresses. ask if your friend knows of anywhere from prom, graduations, etc.

Ask your bridesmaid. She may have some ideas since I'm sure she's friends with other Mormons who have been in weddings either as BMs or brides and will know where to shop.

I'm not Mormon, but I don't get why we (culturally) show so much skin, especially for winter weddings. I checked out this site for my own wedding.

What about the convertible/wrap dresses. Some you can pull into a cap sleeve and you can wear the tube to cover the cleavage.

Thanks so much for more ideas, I really like the convertible dress idea, I would maybe just have to get one for myself to wear for fun! I actually asked my bridesmaid and she recommended Shabby Apple for dresses but I wanted maybe some different styles that the other bridesmaids could wear in the same color and I didn't think that site was quite what I was going for. I found a dress from Aria (attached) that I love actually and my bridesmaid said she loved it too and it would look great on all my bridesmaids so maybe I'll just stick to something uniform if they all like it. However our wedding is still about 2 years out (and my LDS bridesmaid is trying to get pregnant now) so it's quite early to order...but hopefully it's still around when it comes time for ordering. I'm waiting on some fabric swatches to also make sure I like the color. I decided long ago that I wanted red in my wedding so hopefully it looks perfect! I wanted to have backup ideas though so this is a great reference!

I think it's awesome that you're being so accommodating for her! I know yu can order matching shawls or fabric with Alfred Angelo dresses. They have a modest wedding line so possible bm too? What about going to non bridal stores like jcp or Macy's, etc? Depending on the color that could work!

I was going to suggest the Alfred Sung line at Dessy too...they are a bit pricey (About $200 for most full length ones) but my girls are wearing them and the fabric and colors are AMAZING. And the styles vary quite a bit.
