mob & mog dresses

Kristin, on April 24, 2019 at 10:21 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 6
I am still in the early planning stages but my FMIL is excited and has been looking at dresses for herself. She asked if my mom knew what color she wanted yet because she gets first pick. I’m not sure if she meant so that she doesn’t pick the same color or that she thinks they need to match. Does anyone know if that’s tradition? She also asked if I knew if I wanted my bridesmaids in long or short dresses because then her and my mom were suppose to wear the same length as the bridesmaids. I had never heard this before as I’ve seen many MOBs and MOGs not in the same length. I told her she could wear whatever length she wanted and that my mom will most likely wear knee length, but I think she feels that she needs to wear long if my bridesmaids are.

The old tradition was that the MOB picked first. The MOG then picked something that didn't have to match, but didn't clash, was in a comparable degree of formality, etc.

That tradition has pretty much gone by the wayside now, especially because there may be a mother and stepmother involved on one side or the other, and you really don't want to try to coordinate dresses among four people (some of whom may be on bad terms). However, if your FMIL wants to coordinate with your mother, and your mother is okay with that, there is no harm to it.

Tradition would be for MOB to pick her dress first, and MOG does it second so as not to match, but also to compliment the colors. As the bride you can decide if you want to tell them what colors to wear or not wear.

At first I didn’t want to tell them what they couldn’t wear, and just wanted them to be comfortable. Then the nice woman who is doing my alterations pointed out a few things to me... my bridesmaids will be wearing burgundy, so green for the moms should be avoided (Christmas colors), dark purple will look odd in pictures, and if they wear a champagne color it will blend with my dress too much. She reminded me that it might only be “one day” or “a few pictures”, but these are photos that we’ll have forever.

Yes, my FMIL asked my mom what color she wanted so they didn't match. My mom is going dark in the jade green or plum realm and FMIL said she wanted a dusty rose color. As far as lengths go I don't think it has to match, they can choose whatever. My mom wears just past the knee dresses most times.

    Hi Kristin!

It's sweet your FMIL is so excited about the wedding!

This is an old tradition which is outdated at this point in time.

I would advise you thank your FMIL for her offer to be flexible but let her know she can wear whatever she wants and feels comfortable in Smiley smile

Have you decided on your own wedding colors yet?

Yes, I just want her and my mon to be comfortable!
Right now I’m thinking the girls will be in navy blue and they guys in some sort of navy and dark grey with either white or white and mauve flowers with lots of greenery.

I really like these colors! Grennery with navy is a gorgeous combo!

Have you started looking at any bridesmaid dresses yet?
