MOB/ MOG dresses? Does it matter to you?

My FMIL made a point to get a dress in my "color scheme", which is great but I had never really thought of her needing to "match". I went dress shopping with my mom last weekend and we found a dress that is sooooo beautiful and flattering on her. However, it is not one of my colors. It is a dark emerald green and won't clash with anything, but after hearing from FMIL about her dress, she is worried that people will notice. She also had never heard of the mothers matching the wedding colors. Was this important to you? Would you side eye a MOB for her dress color?

It didn't matter to me at all. Our colors were mostly shades of purple, and my mom wore navy and MIL wore burgundy.

Doesn't matter much to me what the mothers wear... but my mom keeps asking me what she is 'allowed' to wear. I have told her: anything you like, but it is like she's suspicious I will change my mind. Probably I will end up going shopping with her so she KNOWS it's okay and it will be fun!

It didn't matter to me. My dress was red on top, but I told people they were welcome to wear red. It's my favorite color I'm all for others rocking it. I did go shopping with my mom though and we looked for something that would look nice next to my dress so that she wouldn't clash. That wasn't so much me being picky though as her wanting to look nice. She wore a cream colored dress with a black lace overlay. It looked great on her.

I wanted the mom's to be comfortable but did think about pictures and landed on black/navy/gray for preferred colors. I just thought it would go better since bridesmaid dresses were red, any color would really stand out. I didn't care if it was long or short or about any details.

DH's mom was harder because she kept picking flashy dresses (like sequin-y prom dresses) or insisted on champagne (too close to white and the color I wanted to wear but wasn't able too....). It was really hard to not say "White or any derivative is for the BRIDE!". She was a total pain about it. She told me that it was equally important what she wore because people would be looking at her just as much as me.... I got REALLY frustrated with her! I didn't want to tell her what to wear but she wasn't getting common sense that the mom's are not supposed to wear white, and while yes, look nice, it's not about them!

I don't care at all really. My MOH's are wearing dusty rose pink and my mom is wearing a pale gray dress with a little sparkle. My FMIL just got her dress and it's red. Definitely may clash a bit but she loves it, she looks gorgeous in it, so that's what she should wear! Smiley smile

I loved what my mom ended up choosing. We looked at way more places for her dress than mine haha! She was initially going to go with short, but I thought this was so pretty and everyone agreed when she tried it on for family and friends. She said it was really comfy... best part? $50 at Macy's! I've seen LOTS of mom's get this dress (it comes in black, navy, charcol and tan).

Both my mil and mom asked what colors I preferred. I gave them several options, but told them whatever they want is fine. I preferred that they didn't clash with the wedding colors, but they didn't need to match. Both ended up picking black dresses. My mil's dress was not my taste, but she liked it so she wore it. If you and your mom both like the emerald dress, she should wear it.

@Michelle- I love that dress. I actually have it to wear as a BM for a friend's wedding. If your mom/FMIL looks and feels fabulous, let them wear whatever. If you need guidance, look to the formality/time of day/season for dress length, but ultimately that doesn't really matter either.

I went shopping with my mom. She wanted my opinion and she wanted to try a different style dress than she's worn before. We had a great time and she ended up getting a navy dress with beading and our colors were green and purple. MIL allowed my mom to pick out her dress first, old school tradition that she felt like she needed to stick to, not my request. She looked fabulous in a gold beaded dress. It was important to me that my moms be comfortable and feel fantastic. I requested they be short dresses but more so they wouldn't be too hot and there would be a higher chance of them wearing the dress again.

Definitely have your mom wear that dress - it's beautiful! I don't want the moms to clash or look too matchy-matchy with the bridal party. That's about it! Oh and don't wear white Smiley smile

@NowASeptMrs my mom wore that same dress for my wedding!

Both my mom and MIL ended up coordinating with our wedding colors, but that's because that's what they liked. I would have been more than fine with them choosing different colors.

I just asked the moms not to wear Navy blue because my bridesmaids will be wearing that. Now I'm thinking that it probably doesn't matter but my mom and stepmom both found black dresses that are beautiful and they love them and feel comfortable so that's all that matters.

My mom has purchased and returned no fewer than 7 dresses and keeps asking what she should wear. I honestly do not care. My FMIL hasn't asked me either way and I don't even know if she has a dress yet.

We didn't care as long as they were happy!

My DH walked them both down the aisle, my mom is in black and his in taupe.

Thanks everyone! I would never NOT let them wear what they wanted Celia. This post was more to find out what the consensus was on the need for them to match my colors (something my FMIL brought up) to put my mom's mind at ease about her dress.

This is pretty important to my mom, so it's been important to me. We decided that a variation of the colors, without having to match, is the best way to go (for our personal preferences.) My colors are grey and rose, and she has been looking at silver dresses and darker, kind of brownish pinks. I definitely have how things would look in pictures in my mind, but lots would compliment this.

One thing I would say about the moms who are asking lots of questions about this: My best friend said that shopping together for a MOB dress was one of their great bonding times. I see this in my mom too. We text each other possible dresses, and are always on the lookout for the best dress for her to wear!

@Michelle to answer your question more directly, I don't think they need to match the colors, but it is probably a good idea to make sure they know what they are. Our mom's wanted to choose something they felt comfortable in, but they didn't want to clash.

@Jessi it's a super popular dress! I think lots of department stores carry that brand and it's very pretty on lots of body types :-)

@Michelle, to be more direct, I wanted to have them stay in a certain theme of colors. My colors were red and black, so I wanted them to stay in the gray, black, navy color scheme. Aside from that I just wanted them in something comfortable. My mom thought her dress (pic on page 2) was too bling-y but everyone liked it, as did I, and she ended up liking it too. FMIL ended up in navy and short in the end and I was very pleased with her dress, but only after several prom-y dresses or white dresses. I guess I would make it clear white/champage/platinum is for the bride and give them a color palette to work with IF you care about the color.

Cropping out heads for privacy because IDK if everyone wants their pic on the internet but pic 1 is what DH's mom ended up wearing, I liked it. And pic 2 is our whole family together... the colors blended well. 2 SILs were BMs, my brother was a GM, and dad's wore the same tuxes as GM but with black ties instead of red.
