Mini-moon suggestions within driving distance of NJ?

Mrs. Lav, on January 12, 2015 at 11:09 AM Posted in Honeymoon 1 15

Hi all! My fiance and I are most likely doing a mini-moon (budget reasons, plus I just feel like we'll be too tired for a big trip) after our November wedding. (Don't worry-- we'll probably still do a big trip for our first anniversary or something.)

We're fine with driving 6-8 hours from our home in NJ. We'd like something relaxed, maybe B&B-related? We were thinking Cape Cod with possible day trips to Martha's Vineyard, etc. I'm open to some sight-seeing but nothing jam-packed. I like active things (biking, hiking, etc.) and fiance will indulge me and come along, but they're really not his thing.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

What about a cabin in Vermont? It's beautiful in the fall, while its still quiet before ski and snowboard season starts. We usually try to go in August which is nice because you can go to the swimming holes and relax under the covered bridges, but it's so nice in the fall! (BTW I'm on my phone and can't see your date so I apologize if it's late November and fall is irrelevant!)

Poconos? Cape Cod is pretty slow during the late fall--you'd probably get a great rate but not sure if there's much to do.

We are going to Smuggler's Notch Vermont. Not sure if that's within your driving distance but it's everything you sound like you're looking for and more. We're going in the fall but it honestly looks beautiful at all times of year. My friend just went right around your wedding time this past year (mid November) and he said it was cold but he and his wife had a BLAST! Hope this helps Smiley smile

Thanks, everyone! We've been to Cape May a few times (and it was awesome, even off-season in March) but might want to try something different. Vermont's an idea-- we don't ski so neither of us have been there before!

And I'm pretty flexible on the driving as long as we can get there within a day-- my family loves to drive to Florida so that's always a 18+ hour ordeal haha. I also went to grad school in KY and can make that drive in my sleep.

What about the Catskills/Adirondacks in NYS? I agree Cape Cod/beach areas will be slow in the fall. Vermont may be slow, too, in November. . . . I'd definitely do a bunch of research b/c if ski season hasn't started yet, a lot of businesses just won't be open. (Even if you just want to relax, keep in mind you'll need to eat!)

Hello from Kelly, owner of Travel by Kelly, a big Congrats on your engagement. A mini moon is an awesome idea if you can't get away for longer, at least it gives you time to relax and reflect together right after the big day. Anywhere in new England would be great, you could move around as well, like spend a bit of time in Cape Cod (which, I agree with others) is an awesome time in the off season of the Fall as it can get really really crowded and expensive during the high summer months, same as Marthas Vineyard. You could also pay a visit to Newport, RI which has great restaurants and things to do. If your into wineries, we have the Coastal wine trail up here in NE and that can be fun, I am happy to make suggestions. I'm from this area so I know it pretty well. I'm a full service travel agent so I it's always my pleasure to help with any travel plans. Good luck with all of your wedding planning. And remember , Have Fun!

FH and I just went to Newport, RI in November and we loved it. It was relaxing but there were so many restaurants (amazing seafood), bars, shopping and it's right by the water. We also did tours of all the mansions. It was awesome.

You could do Nantucket. its one of my favorite places and its small so you can easily explore the island, there should be plenty of restaurants open also

Just keep in mind if you're going to a place that is mostly summer vacation-oriented, you may have a hard time finding restaurants, etc. that are open. We went to Maine for our HM at the end of August, and there were some things that were starting to close then. The first night we got in late and couldn't find anywhere to eat dinner because everything was closed--we ended up driving half an hour to find an open restaurant.

I'm from NJ but having my wedding in Shenandoah National Park in Luray, VA (my grandparents live there). It's an absolutely gorgeous park in all seasons with great hiking and tons of other attractions in the area. It's about a 6-hour drive.

Edit: Oops, just remembered it's 2016, not 2015!!! Such a late response lol. I hope you had a lovely wedding & honeymoon!
