Military Uniform Conundrum

Rebekah, on January 6, 2015 at 2:30 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 13

My fiance is a cadet at the Air Force Academy and when cadets get married they generally wear what is referred to as "mess dress." (google "USAFA mess dress" if you want to see) They do not have to but I let him pick and he chose to wear his uniform. I decided that it would be practical for his groomsmen to do likewise to avoid having to buy/rent tuxes. 5 out of his 7 groomsmen are cadets. Since those two will be mismatched from the rest I have to figure out what to dress them in and where to place them for pictures and the ceremony. His best man is a civilian, so he will stand closest to the groom. I plan on placing the other civilian on the opposite end so that they kind of make book ends. I am at a loss as to what color tux to dress them in. Mess dress is dark blue. Should I put them in dark blue? Black? Dark gray? Light gray? Taupe? GAH. The bridesmaids will be wearing shades of aqua/turquoise/teal/mint which are the wedding colors along with sand. Please help!

I think dark blue will look fine. They will complement the other suits so don't feel that you have to hide them or strategically place them. Tell your photographer your concerns and let them deal with making it look flawless. You can have some fun with the group shots too with two black sheep in the party. Lol.

Dark Blue, have one of the Military GM bring the uniform so you can find a blue that is as close as possible (I never realized how many shades of every color there were until wedding planning!).

I think the dark blue would be fine and I second having one of the GMs bring their uniform to better match the color.

I think the dark gray will look good. The dark blues may clash with each other- if your FH can bring his pants or jacket with him to compare swatches, that may help

I would search to find a dark blue that matches.

Dark blue tuxes will be hard to find for rent. If you are willing to do suits, you may be able to find something, but seriously, dark blue tuxes will be impossible. FH really wanted navy, and we had no choice but to buy (and his tux cost more than my dress, so definitely would not expect the GM to pay to buy).

If you want to do tuxes, I would just do black.

Dark blue is fine but I think just simple black tuxes will still look nice. My dad's dress blues for the Army are "dark blue" but in photos they show up as a much much lighter blue than they appear to in person. Just something to keep in mind. If your two other GM already own a black suit, maybe you could just let them wear that so they can save money like your other GM since they already are wearing something they own?

I am probably in the minority but I would NOT go with dark blue. You are going to have a very difficult time finding a blue that is a good match (particularly when photographed) which will leave you with a "we tried to match and missed" look.

Since the uniforms are a very classic look, I would stick with a classic look for the 2 civilian gentlemen. Simple, classic black tuxes would be lovely. Or, as Lauren suggested, classic black suits.

If you are going to have Airmen in or line up, the civilians don't need to match. I think it would look better if the Airmen stood out in their dress uniforms and the civilians in black tuxes or grey if that goes better with he color scheme. I like to see military men in photos and I'd feel some kind of way if I saw civilians dressed similar to Airmen. Just my opinion, I'm military as well.
