So, I've got quite a sensitive issue to discuss with my guests. Because we are holding our wedding on a Navy base, we need to submit everyone's names in advance for access. Foreign visitors require quite a bit more information than domestic visitors. My FH is a first generation American, and has many family members not originally born in the US. Can anyone help think of a polite way to ask family and friends if they are US citizens, or if they have a green card? I don't want to offend anyone, but it may mean they can't come to they wedding if I don't get the correct information!

"Undocumented" is illegal. Period. End of story. Anyone in this country "undocumented" is here illegally. If they are here on a visa of some kind of visa they are fine. OP should not have to worry about if she can host people here illegally. That's not her problem.

And O&S- how exactly does one get into Canada without a passport? That is a serious question because I was under the impression that to cross into Canada from the US a passport was required, unless you live in a state bordering Canada and can get an enhance license in that state.

I have no problems with immigration done the right way. As in documented and legally. I will not stop using the words illegal or criminal for people who come into this country illegally, because that's what it is. That's not hate, that's called abiding by the law.

And you never answered my question on how you can get into Canada without a passport. Which I assume if that is true you would share how that's possible.

I'm sorry but refugees can also take the right steps to come here legally. My opinion does't change.

    Refugees ARE here legally

ETA: Refugees come into the country after the gov't vets their background and they get placed in different cities. They are not here illegally.

Also - where is your empathy??? FFS these people's homes were burned to the ground, their families and friends killed.

I'm so glad to see that everyone here is supportive of Indigenous Rights, you all gave money to Standing Rock and would like to see Natives have legal rights to their land, correct. Because, unless, you are Indigenous, you have no right to label anyone a miscreant immigrant. Everyone to NA is an immigrant unless you are Indigenous.

I guess my comment on page 3 asking for us to drop the immigration argument wasn't effective Smiley smile , so this discussion is now locked from future commenting.

Jena - I hope you did get some helpful advice from this thread, and I totally agree with the suggestions to call or email *all* of your guests with the ID requirement information so that they are all properly prepared!
