Might Elope to nc mountains with only immediate family

Allison, on August 9, 2019 at 4:46 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 16
Hi all! I got engaged end of May and have already dived into the wedding planning hard core lol.....and its already stressing me out. We've booked our venue and bought little decorations here & there but have not committed to anything else just yet. My fiance and I are SERIOUSLY considering taking our special day to the mountains in NC with only our immediate family. Maybe 15 total of us. A sweet ceremony with an amazing view & then a great meal afterwards with family. We'd then drive to a cabin to enjoy our honeymoon. This saves so much money & saves me from the stress! This will be a second marriage for us both btw.......and my question is this. How do I break the news to friends and family expecting to be invited to a wedding? Send engagement announcements stating that we are eloping? Or do we stay hush about it as and announce afterwards? I don't know how this works? Any suggestions?

I would not send out any type of announcement. To me, that would make it seem like they would be getting an invitation to a wedding or wedding event. I think have the NC mountain wedding with your family and then announcing it would be the best option.
By the way, I love that idea! We are getting married at a vineyard in the NC mountains! We love it there!

Congratulations on your engagement! We are also eloping in the mountains but the White Mountains in NH! I don't feel sending out an announcement is necessary. We aren't telling anyone we are eloping (accept our parents) until afterwards, but not formally. I plan to post pictures and a sweet caption on fb and ig but that's about it.

Hi. Thank you & congrats to you too!! That is exactly how I envision it going.....posting beautiful pictures and announcing afterwards. I just feel bad for my close friends who are SO excited for me but this is something we really want. Good luck on your beautiful adventure

Personally, I would not say anything until you get back. My sister did that when she did the Vegas thing. You can send a card out afterwards saying "Ms. Jennifer Smith and Mr. Edward Jones were married in a private ceremony in North Carolina on November 18, 2020"

Do not mention gifts, do not mention registry.

If you are having another reception, this is the time to announce it. If not, just leave your new address and note if you changed your name.

Your elopement sounds great!!! You will NOT regret going small and intimate. If it is stressing you out now, I would hate for you to live with this stress for the next year plus.

I agree 😊 Thank you so much for your input. We think it would be fun to have our close friends and family together for a casual party after we come back. Barbeque or a food truck thing. Thanks again

I would come to a food truck reception so fast it would make your head spin.

We had a DW with 15 guests (then a local reception three months later). Do it! Send a marriage announcement with a pic after. Your friends & extended family will understand.

If you want you you could do a cake & punch reception later to celebrate with more people.

I agree with this poster. Your friends and family who truly love you (and I am sure that it everyone, lol) will want you to be happy, comfortable and stress free. Big weddings are not for everyone - accept and do your thing.

And invite me to the food truck reception, lol!!!! (I am kidding.......or am I?)

I wouldn’t send anything out. I would send something out after you get married! What part of the mountains are you thinking. The mountains are beautiful in nc.

Hi Sara. The Blue Ridge Mountains. We've vacationed in Boone, Linville area and absolutely love it! As long as we have a Breathtaking view amongst nature, we will be ecstatic.

That’s beautiful area! We live in the asheville area and grew up here our whole lives. I think we are so used to the mountains that we forget how beautiful it is until we stop and get reminded. You will have such a beautiful wedding!

I'm finding lots of elopement packages based out of Asheville so that might be where I start researching. I know what you mean by growing up in beauty and sometimes forgetting what you live in daily. We live in Florida, born and raised and do NOT enjoy the beaches as much as we should

Asheville is getting to be wedding city. So many people come here to get married now a days. We love the beach because we don’t live close to one. But I understand how someone gets over living close to the beach.

I do too! An intimate wedding in the NC mountains sounds so romantic, less stressful and less expensive than a big wedding.
