Micro-moon frustration

Jennifer, on October 9, 2020 at 5:18 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 5

If this is the worst thing that happens in all my wedding planning, I know I am super lucky. Yes we have had some COVID related hiccups, but nothing we couldn't rework or turn into an opportunity. I'm sure it will be fine once I figure out a Plan B...I'm just not to that point yet. We are getting married 10/31. We opted to hold off on a honeymoon until a bit later, but we wanted to still get away for a day or so to unwind post wedding. We chose a resort in Northern Indiana we have stayed at before (a weekend stay was my Valentine's gift a few years ago). We really like it there, and it was perfect because once we arrived, we didn't have to leave. Everything we would want would be on site. Knowing that they scale back some of their offerings including their restaurant hours after the peak fall foliage season, I called before we booked (about a month ago) and confirmed that all their amenities would be open. I was even able to book reservations at their restaurant for our stay. I also booked our suite and selected an add on package that gave us some fun treats for the room and a $50 gift card for the restaurant.

Fast forward to Tuesday. I get a call from the resort saying they need to move my reservations because as of the day we check in, they are no longer open on Sundays for dinner and all day Monday. I explain I'm confused because I called an confirmed they weren't changing their hours until later in November, and that we can't just move the reservations because we live 2.5 hours away. I also asked about the package we booked and how that would be impacted (as the fun treats would come from the restaurant and we would no longer have a use for the gift card). The poor gentleman on the phone explained they chose to close earlier because business had been slow due to COVID, but he didn't have an answer for my second question, and said he would need to speak to his Manager. He would call me back later that night or the next day. It's now Friday...with no return call.

So the decision I have is do I just call the hotel and cancel the additional package and stay there, or do we look back into some of our other options. While I'm inclined just to stay there and find other food options, FH was *really* looking forward to parking the car and having no where else we needed to be for 36 hours.

I'm reaching out to the resort tonight to see if we can get a final answer on what is happening here. It isn't the end of the world, but disappointing (and frustrating that I may be back on the hunt for a place to stay when I have other tasks to try and knock out).

I can understand your disappointment. I'd wait until Monday to call because the managers are likely not there tonight. I'd recommend that you wait until you speak to the resort managers (assuming you're able to do so early next week) and learn about the other available options before canceling altogether -- maybe the resort can find other ways to accommodate the package you purchased (like providing treats and a gift card to another local swanky restaurant). Since you like the resort, hopefully you'll still be able to stay, change your package, and find an even better restaurant that you love even if you have to drive to get there. Wedding planning, especially during this time, has forced me to try to see (or find) the bright side in everything. Try not to worry . . . and I'm sure it will work out fine. Smiley heart

I don’t have any recommendations, but just wanted to say that I do agree that it sucks. I know that we’ll both live and in the long run the changes we’ve had to make won’t really matter, but having to make the changes still sucks. And it’s definitely frustrating to be told one thing and then find you can’t do it.

That is really frustrating. But, extra cancellations or not, you will still figure out how to have an amazing time with your FH. We got married on Sept 12, and our dream honeymoon was supposed to be to Canada. That got cancelled because the border is still closed, so we went to Oregon. Then the whole state caught on fire too close to be able to cancel our plans without losing a ton of money. So we had to throw our whole itinerary out the window because the air quality was hazardous about 90% of our stay - but we had so much fun! Just focus on the positive things that you will be able to have. Or if you replan, don’t let it over stress you - keep it simple!

I'm so sorry Jennifer - I'd follow up with manager directly about the details of your booking!!

Thanks everyone. Yes COVID has thrown us a curveball...or two... along the way, but we have always been able to turn it around into something good. I am sure this will be no different. I finally received a response from resort Manager and he was less than helpful...more so just confirming the hours had changed and he was sorry. He did say since the restaurant would be open for brunch on the day of our arrival, they could still supply some of the items in the addon, but didn't mention the gift card at all. I guess we *could* leave earlier than planned and get there for brunch....but I'm not sure we can make that work logistically. I'm going to try and give him a call later today after we meet with our caterer.
