Mexico Wedding for us Citizens

Carla, on August 14, 2019 at 9:42 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 4
Hey ladies! I am getting married in Cancun on March 7th 2020, mainly because it’s more affordable and I have family there. I was born in Mexico but I am an American citizen through my father, I am also marrying an American citizen but I am unsure of the process in Mexico ? I would like for our date to stay our actual wedding anniversary but I just found out that was not what my wedding planner had in mind, nobody ever explained anything to me so I am very disappointed. I don’t find it exciting to marry someone prior to “legally” a few days before the actual wedding. Is there any way around this ? From what I was reading there isn’t, but I can’t be the only one confused about this right ? Please let me know your thoughts , thank you in advance !!

When we were looking into getting married in Mexico it required both of and all 4 witnesses to be in Mexico 4 business days before the wedding, blood test, and the ceremony has to be performed by a judge. So it can be done, there’s just a few extra hoops. Our wedding coordinator gave us a list because I had the same concern you did.

You’re welcome! Just make sure you check and double check. If you’re going to a resort the wedding coordinators are very familiar with the rules and requirements. You don’t want to miss one (I probably did because it’s been a while so don’t use my list as your final checklist haha) and not be legally married. Some resorts handle registering the marriage certificate in your state as well.

Here's a listing of the legal requirements to get married in Mexico:

The one thing to be aware of is that for the rest of your life, if you ever need to prove your marriage, you will have to get the marriage certificate from Mexico, rely on Mexican mail (which is often unreliable) to get it to you, and get it translated (in some instances, only approved translators are allowed). You may want to get several certified copies of your marriage certificate up front, and keep them in a safe place, in order to avoid a lot of hassles if you ever need to prove your marriage.
