Mexico or Jamaica

Lisa, on August 22, 2010 at 5:42 PM Posted in Planning 0 32

Has anyone been or have an idea on which location may be cheaper and more of a family friendly spot for a Honeymoon/Fam Vaca?

I have been to both Mexico and Jamaica...I prefer Jamaica, but they are both beautiful places. My trips to Mexico were cheaper than my trips to Jamaica. I think both places will have resorts that offer more family friendly atmospheres, just research out some places.

Personally, there is no freaking way I'd go to Mexico with all the scary stuff going on there. I have been to both places, and they are pretty equal. They are both beautiful. I went to Ocho Rios, Jamaica and had so much fun. You have to go horseback riding, it was one of the most amazing moments. I am also a huge cruise fan, then you can go to lots of places. And its usually cheaper than a vacation to one spot.

I went to Mexico three months ago, and LOVED it!!! We felt very safe there, even outside the resort area. I think the violence is in the northern border area so you should not worry at all. I would highly recommend the Cancun area, the resort we stayed at was Adults Only, but the hotel next to ours was geared towards families.

I've been to both and definitely prefer Jamaica. Can't wait to get there in 29 days! (We're leaving for our honeymoon a couple days after the wedding.)

I agree Mex-i-co.haven't been to Jamaica yet.But from what I know about mexico is that the problems their having is not in the resort areas or around there.I have famliy that still lives in mexico and hear about it just about every other day.

From what I have heard- Mexico is alot cheaper. They are both gorgeous, and if you stay in a big group, not get stupid drunk and wander off and not flash $100s everywhere- it's perfectly safe.

Plus, I think you have more options of 'excursions' to take in Mexico.

I agree with Meghan, there were a lot of different excursions in Mexico. We went to a Mayan Ruin, a sinkhole, used waverunners, and went parasailing. Next time we plan to do a lot more. Smiley smile

Read the papers. The Mexican Cartel wars are all over Mexico. I have cousins in Mexico and have heard from family and it is unsafe all over Mexico. The resort towns are unsafe. Wrong place wrong time?? A stray bullet?? The Cartel have their families living in gated communities in San Diego to keep them safe..makes you think.

Thx for all the input...it will be us 2 our 7 kids & grandchild aging from 21-2yrs...so we are thinking a cruise...we chose this route because we get married 2 wks before school ends and we will be having 2 of our daughters graduate HS (it will be nice of a gift)...so we decided to go back to the original plan in just doing a ceremony & casual party at the park...wait the two wks and take the family vacation...that way we all get enjoy...or I hope we do...lol

People have been kidnapped in the destination areas, not just border areas and "bad Mexico".

@The Potters- Did these people get kidnapped while at a resort? Or where they wandering off to towns near the resort areas? It's important to stay safe anywhere you are. We made smart choices when booking our transportation to and from the resort, and we never felt threatened.

Ok. I went to Mexico this past April and i thought it was GREAT. I even considered it for a destination wedding (i decided on Puerto Rico). As long as you are careful it doesn't really matter where you go. I have traveled all over the world, and even backpacking i have never had any trouble. Of course, use common sense and don't go into the bad parts of town or get crazy drunk in another country.
