Mermaid style dress question (with pics)

SoontobeMRS.H, on September 19, 2013 at 11:16 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 27

For any of you ladies that are married and wore a mermaid dress or already bought your dress and will be wearing a mermaid dress was it difficult to sit, walk, dance in? I have only been interested in the mermaid silhouette and just started to really think things through. The dress I absolutely love Kazane by Winnie Couture fit wonderful but would not be very comfortable to dance (or even walk long distances) in. What was your experience?

Here is a pic of me in the dress when I tried it onSmiley smile Didn't buy it because of the cost but I love the way it fit me!

I wore a mermaid style to my college senior ball and it was great! no you can't shimmy down to the floor, but it is fantastic to walk around and enjoy yourself in, just dance lightly.

    that dress is to-die for!!!

    That is a beautiful gown!

I have a fit-and-flare, which is a modified mermaid. It has more room at the knees so you can walk, but still has that nice silhouette.

I've seen models in "real" mermaids and they can hardly sit or walk. If you like the style, but want comfort, look for a "modified mermaid" or a "fit and flare"

I tried on a "real" mermaid style dress and I fell in love with it and because of it I ended up going home not being able to decide between two one a ball gown the other was the mermaid. Main reason was because I could not even walk in that mermaid dress and well when I wanted to sit down I was literally sitting like a mermaid and the dress fit to wear I could just walk out the store in it. But it was still very uncomfortable so at the end I got a "modified mermaid" dress. And it was just as lovely actually even more lovelier.

    OMG that dress is stunning.

The mermaid style was what I wanted from the beginning, so that's basically all that I tried on when I went dress shopping. There were a few that were SO beautiful but difficult to get around in (walking, dancing, etc.), so I picked something that was beautiful AND comfortable. Ended up going with a fit and flare. :-)

I agree that you should look into a fit and flare/trumpet style instead if you still want to move but have the tighter fit. Look for ones that flare out after hugging your butt, it allows you to move your knees, and get your groove on.

I had a mermaid for my wedding and while it can give you a great figure (as you already found out), it does make it more difficult to sit down, especially when you're trying to get into and out of a limo. I had more difficulty with walking in mine because I had an extra layer of crinoline added in to give it that extra bit of flare.

Another thing you should consider is the fabric of the dress. When the seamstress altered my dress, I told her it was super tight (like, can't even drink a sip of water tight) but she told me the fabric does have a little bit of stretch to it and it will loosen a little bit as the day goes on. Well, wouldn't you know it, it felt 'just right' by the time I hit the reception so it was great to walk around in to mingle with the guests and to dance Smiley smile

I had a trumpet style. It flares lower than a fit-and-flare, but slightly higher than a true mermaid. I highly suggest it if you like that look! I had no problem dancing, sitting, etc. Proof:

When choosing dresses, I was between a mermaid and a fit and flare. I had a hard time sitting in the mermaid but was told that since I have extra length (there was also a lace overlay) it could be modified to fit a little more like a fit and flare so that it wouldn't be so tight near my knees. I ended up with the fit and flare and have no problems moving at all, other than the fact that it's soooo heavy. Keep that in mind because my dress is similar to your picture in the fact that it's similar material and the train was long like yours (but I LOVE the flowers in the back). If you end up with a similar dress to the one in the picture, get it in a corset back. I couldn't imagine mine being a zipper or buttons because it's so heavy I'm sure it'd keep falling down throughout the night once it stretches a little.

@SXC one of the main reasons I wanted to get it is the train is detachable. Here is a pic without the train.
