Mercury Glass Reception Decor

TheLuckiest, on March 27, 2013 at 10:12 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 16

Hi ladies! I am purchasing all the clearance mercury glass I can find for our wedding reception, and I'm trying to think of creative ways to implement it at our country club reception.

As it stands right now, here's the visual for the reception tables:

White tablecloth.

Silver chargers (if I can find them cheap enough).

10" round mirror.

Small crackled mirror glass hurricane holding flowers.

3 mercury glass votive holders with white candles.

The tables at the venue tend to get a little crowded once you factor in the silverware, bread plate, glasses, etc...but I feel like the current setup may be a little plain. Florals are hydrangeas, delphinium, queen anne's lace, wax, bear grass, and larkspur.

Is there anything else I can do to make it look special without being too plain or too cluttered?? I'd love to see pictures too!

Oh, I also have some cobalt cut glass votive holders that a little bigger than the mercury glass ones, but I don't have enough to do more than one at each table. And the napkins on the table will be "Once Upon a Time Blue"...to match the bridesmaid dresses, so the general colors are white, light greyish blue, silver, with hints of cobalt just to make things pop!

I would add some ribbon here and there. Anything reflective. Also, you can MAKE mercury glass yourself. Buy looking glass paint by kryolan. It's great fun too! Here's a great tutorial, if you're interested. It isn't my post, but I used her instructions. :-) http://www.savvydesignwest.com/2012/01/how-to-mercury-glass-no-spend-challenge.html

@Nancy T...They are typical 8-seater round banquet tables.

@Buffee G. Nice! I'm not sure what I have that I could turn into mercury glass, but I'm bookmarking thins link. Thanks! (Maybe I'll find glass chargers really cheap and can mercurify them!

If you don't have enough hurricanes, can you do the cobalt blue votives on some tables?

Don't forget your cake table, gift/card table, place cards table will need decor, too.

If you don't have a round table at home, what about making a circle on the floor and putting everything (centerpieces, chargers, bread plates, glasses, etc.) in it to get a feel.

@Nancy T...we definitely have enough hurricanes, but not enough cobalt. Your idea about a circle on the floor is brilliant! I will be able to do a mock up with what I have, but I think as we get closer maybe I should make an appointment to go with the florist to the venue. You know, it doesn't help that the GM who was helping me with all these things took another job and now I have no one at my venue to help since their event coordinator retired and was not replaced. That's why I need all the help I can get before I go in, since they have not selected new leadership yet and I don't want to confuse anyone.

I've been thinking about the placecard table...but I don't know what to do for the cake table and gift table. To be honest, I didn't even THINK about the gift table. Eeek!!

To be honest, it's hard to imagine because all the pictures I find in magazines are unrealistic. Either too rustic or too over-the-top luxe. :\ Ahh, 1st world wedding dilemmas.

I am using mercury glass at my reception too! Our table set up with all white linens, about 9 mercury votives with candles and a good sized floral arrangement in the center. You could always add more candles? Will you have favors and place cards on the table, because that will take up room too.

@Sarah B...yes, I forgot about those too! Silver favor boxes, and place cards. I like the idea of adding more candles. With only have a 10" mirror, would you recommend putting some of the candle off the mirror? I can see how this would be really cute if I had taller votive holders and then the shorter ones (they're only a tiny bit taller than the candle, so maybe 4 inches? Do you have different heights or all one for the votives?

My candle holders are all the same size, but I agree that different heights would add a nice element! I think you could definitely put some of the candles off the mirror. It will have a nice reflection of all the candles that you place close by! I have a feeling if you set up a mock table you would get a better idea of how everything will look. Once you add the favors onto the table you might decide you have enough!

This is my favorite wedding using mercury glass. I think the small votives look perfect.

I'm doing mercury glass too! I was getting a little overwhelmed, so I did a complete mock-up of the table (I only set out one place setting though). I'm a little confused about the linens still, but it really helped me sort out the candles and such.

Have you tried http://www.save-on-crafts.com/ ? They've got so much you're sure to find something you like. I'm not sure the exact feel you're going for, but a quick scroll through the candles/candleholders section yielded these:
