Menu choices on RSVP card

Kori, on January 13, 2015 at 2:42 PM Posted in Planning 0 8

Are you including exact menu options (Chicken Parmigiana, Herb Chicken, Braised Beef, etc) or just strictly Beef, Chicken, Fish or vegetarian options? I am trying to schedule my tasting with our venue but it may not happen until after I was planning to purchase the invitations, in which case, I won't know what the exact menu with be.

A brief description is nice - like you have above. Some people will only eat certain types/cuts of fish or red meat especially. You could also put the details on your wedding website and do a "please see website for meal descriptions" on the card.

I think it's fine to just put chicken/beef/fish etc. (I've even seen cute RSVP cards that have pictures of the animals instead of words). The only exception is if there is something in the chicken or beef that could affect your guests. For example, I'm having chicken cordon bleu. I wrote out the exact menu option because I have a couple of kosher guests who can't have ham. That would suck to follow kosher laws, order chicken, and then find you can't even eat it because there is ham inside the chicken.

I'm including the specifics (Filet Mignon, Eggplant Parm, etc).

I sort of wrote the description: chicken chesapeake, filet mignon, and vegetarian

ETA: I did that because I know many people (including 2 of my BM) have shellfish allergies and I wouldn't want them to order the chicken chesapeake and realize they couldn't eat it!

I know this isn't helpful, but we are not including choices at all on our RSVPs because we are doing family style, for us it is just one less thing we have to keep track of while still being somewhat of a served meal.

That being said, I always like it when people specify what exactly the meal choices are. I like the idea of saying to check the website for specifics too. It is always frustrating to me when people just list fish or chicken, and then I have to guess if I will eat it. (I am a very picky eater)

I'm in the same situation you are. Our menu won't be finalized until after the invitations go out. Therefore we are just listing fish, chicken or vegetarian. I've been to plenty of weddings in the past that did this. It has never been an issue for me as a guest.

We are having our tsvps on our website. We posted our complete menu on our site. For those that don't have Internet access (less than 10) they have our phone number and we will enter the information for them

Echoing (and expanding upon) some of what was already said -- if you setup a wedding website on WeddingWire (it's free) you can list your menus on there. Not only that, you can type your guest list (or import it from an Excel spreadsheet, if you're so inclined) and allow your guests to RSVP online. So not only will they see the meal choices, but they can select right there and be done with it, no need to worry about mailing a card back. My wife and Ioved this feature for our own wedding, but we still included reply cards with our invites, to satisfy those who didn't want to deal with the website. Most people responded online. Another benefit: WeddingWire keeps track of the choices, so you not only have an overall count for each meal choice, but when you build your table seating chart, it can provide a table-by-table breakdown... table 3 has 3 chickens, 2 fish and 4 beef, for example. (Note, our wedding was in 2011; not sure if any of these features have changed since then.)
