Memorial Day Weekend Wedding

Taylor, on March 30, 2020 at 4:41 PM Posted in Planning 0 4

Hi all! I have been very torn on picking my date. We were really considering doing Memorial Day Weekend of 2021 but I have heard a lot of reasons not to do it. It is technically a destination wedding as well. I am so torn and need to get my date set in the next week! We are getting married in Palisade, CO and it is so gorgeous around the end of May or early June (the issue with June is we would only be able to do the first weekend, so the weekend right after Memorial Day). What do you all think?

I think the problem with it being a holiday weekend and destination wedding is that the prices for flights might be inflated due to it being a holiday weekend. however i can see the appeal because since it already is on a holiday weekend, people might very well be inclined to go.

I think it's nice that many people might have an extra day or two off work already so they would have more time for travel. However, I agree with PP that prices might be inflated. Unfortunately flight prices aren't available yet for that time, but maybe you could look at hotel prices and compare them for Memorial Day weekend and the first weekend of June to get an idea of the price differences. I think people will understand why you chose that weekend, and if you send your save-the-dates early enough to give people plenty of time to plan, it should be okay. Good luck!

We were supposed to get married memorial weekend 2020 but postponed to Labor Day weekend in light of global pandemic. We chose a holiday weekend to maximize our and our guests PTO as it’s a destination wedding in New Orleans. We didn’t hear a single gripe or complaint, rather we were met with excitement. We are marrying on the Sunday of holiday weekend because NOLA is always on, regardless of day of the week, it was several thousand dollars cheaper, and this gives people the option to travel on Saturday and not use vacation days if needed.

We’ve got people using the trip as their family vacation, others leaving kids at home for an adult getaway, some taking weeklong road trips to explore, others flying in for 2 nights of festivities, etc.
Bottom line, the people who truly want to be there will make it, and as long as you give plenty of notice (yours seems to be a year out!) people can make/adjust plans and save up.
Flights were a bit more expensive, however our room blocks provided rates that were comparable or less than an average weekend.

It's up to you in the end, but with inflated prices and people's standing plans that they usually have for long weekends, it *can* be asking a lot of your guests to host a long weekend wedding. The smaller your guest list, the easier this might be, tbh.
