Meeting the parents

Mrs. Spring, on December 23, 2020 at 12:15 PM Posted in Family and Relationships 0 33
My forner college roommate who is from 🇬🇭 Ghana, told me that in her culture, one does not introduce a significant other to their parents until he/she is sure they want to marry.

How long did you date your significant other until you met his/her parents?

I think we had been dating a few months before I met his mom, and I think I met his dad that same year! The same goes for when he met my parents.

About 2 months in. Kinda fast in hindsight but we are older so the whole relationship progressed quickly in the start.

My mom met my husband after about 2 weeks but at the time I lived with her. I met his dad maybe two months into us dating and his mom and sister a year and a half but they lived in another state. His sister friended me on fbook awhile before meeting.

I think I met his family a couple weeks after we started dating when he invited me over for a family birthday bbq. He met most of my immediate family a week or so later when they invited him for dinner. He met my dad after about 8 months of dating.

My parents met my husband after a weeks of dating. My husband and I met online so we talked for about a month before meeting in person/dating so I knew my husband for about two months before he met my parents. Although I was 22 at the time I still lived at my parents' house and they were not comfortable with me staying over at my husband's apartment until they met him so my parents, husband and I went out for ice cream.

I met his father after a month. I met his mother after 7 months. He met my mother at the 7 month mark as well and didn't meet my father until almost a year later.

In my family, it was a running joke that none of my boyfriends ever met my father because I'd cut them after a couple of months. When he met my fiance, he said it would be irony that I married someone with his name. And here we are almost 4 years later LOL

FH met my dad about a month in because he came down to help me move. He met my mom at one of my performances probably three months in. I met his mom, stepdad and siblings three months in. I met his dad probably 6 months in. I've always tried to let my parents meet people within a few months because they've always been on the money on if it'll be worth my time or not lol.

My fiance and I are a weird example because we were friends first but most of the time it's anywhere from a few weeks to 5 months.

Well we were friends first so he met my parents when we were 13. However I wasn't introduced to his parents until we were like 21 (started dating at 15) guess he wanted it to be serious first.

I honestly can't remember, but I want to say a few months in. I was still living with my parents at the time, but we weren't hanging out at my house - he would typically just pick me up to go on dates. We did that for about 4 months, and then I ended up getting an apartment with a friend.

We started dating in May, and I'm pretty sure he joined me and my family for Thanksgiving, but they had met prior to that.

That’s very true of most African countries. My husband and I are also originally from Africa (not
From Ghana though). I was formally introduced to his mom about 2 years into dating when he decided he wanted to propose. She knew of me though since we were friends before. He didn’t get introduced to my father until he was ready to propose (also about 2 years later). We had told each other siblings who live locally about a month or so when we started dating. The concept of dating doesn’t really click in the elderly minds. They usually think you’re either friends or fiancé to be married, nothing in between. It doesn’t matter how old you are.

Well, DH still lived at home, and while his parents were out of the country when we met... within a few weeks they were back!

I also dragged him to meet my dad when my dad came east, *immediately*.

...But I also knew I was going to marry DH nearly right away, so...

Okay, wow they sound very welcoming. I've been with my Fh for over 5 years and I'm only facebook friends with just ONE of his family members.
