Medium vs high resolutions photos...

KR, on November 2, 2013 at 5:05 PM Posted in Planning 0 10

Hello, ladies! I am looking at a photographer who will give me all my edited photos on a cd in medium resolution format. I'm not photo savvy enough to know if med. res. is sufficient for most things. Do I need high resolution or is medium good enough for just printing out some copies for a photo album or putting in a frame? Thanks!!

High resolution is def better for larger prints. If all you want is 4x6 or even 5x7 I would say medium is okay but what if you want a large print down the road? It may not be the best for that.

I am curious why you only want medium res. pictures? Most photographers will give you high res. pictures automatically.....

No, you want high resolution prints... Especially since that tells you something about the photographer only being willing to give you medium res pictures

Thanks everyone! I would prefer high, the photographer only offers medium. I assume that's so you will buy prints from her, which makes sense.

Wow. Sorry that would be enough reason for me to stay away from that photographer... There is plenty of photographer out there that will give you high-res. pics and a release to get them printed wherever you want to.

Typically medium res photos are good for 8x10 and smaller prints. This is definitely a tactic that some photographers will use in the hopes that they will be able to get print sales for any larger prints or canvases and such.

My brother and SIL's photographer only gave them medium res prints. I designed their wedding album from them and even just for their album, I felt myself limited multiple times by the size of photos. My SIL originally wanted a couple photos to span the entire 2 page spread and it just simply was not possible due to only having the medium res photos.

I personally wouldn't go with a photographer who is only going to give you the medium res instead of the full res. If you love this photographer's work, you could always try negotiating though. "I really love your work and our choice is between you and another photographer. That photographer offers full res photos instead of medium though which is really important to us. Is that something you could offer us?"

If he's giving print rights to you, I'd demand high. He shoots in high. The med resolution will limit you on things like larger prints, or even if you want to crop a picture before you print it out. Print rights should be everything they have in a printable version, not a limited one.

You want high, if they won't offer it to you... go somewhere else.

There is no reason he would do that other than to scam you out of more of your money. Good photogs offer high-res and print release. Which you need. If you try to blow up a med-res print, it will be blurry.
