Meal options?

Em, on June 5, 2018 at 11:43 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 27
So I assembling our tentative menu for the caterer and I'm not sure what/how many meal options to offer. I think we are going with plated it that makes any difference.

Iwas thinking of doing choice of crab cakes or pork tenderloin, but is it weird not to have a chicken or steak option? Would you be fine picking between those two choices? Tell me your thoughts!

I think just crab cakes or pork is odd. You should have at least a chicken. A lot of people don't eat pork and/or shellfish. I'd have 3 options if available: a meat, a seafood, and a veggie.

Are you going to accommodate people who reach out with other dietary restrictions? Most weddings I have been to have a vegetarian option, especially because there are plenty of people who don't eat red meat or seafood.

To answer your question more directly: If my spouse and I were invited to a wedding with those two food options, we would reach out about alternative food. If there was no other option aside from pork tenderloin and crabcakes, we would RSVP as a no. Floof doesn't eat red meat and is limited on what seafood he can eat for health reasons, and I don't eat meat at all. As long as you're OK with that potential result from some of your guests, go for it. Smiley smile

Both of those options sound delicious! Those choices alone, however, may be difficult for guests who have dietary restrictions to be able to find something to eat. My partner has a fish allergy, I have a gluten sensitivity and neither of us eat beef or pork products, so if we were guests, we would have to make alternate dining arrangements. If you are concerned about guest restrictions, I might suggest including a third, vegetable based dish, or an option on your rsvp to indicate dietary restrictions to be considerate of guests with limited diets. Happy planning!

Me personally, I'd pick pork and be done. But Pork and shellfish are bottom feeders ( for lack of a better word? ) and some people don't eat those.

I'd suggest adding a chicken and vegetarian dish.

Personally, I would at least have a chicken option. As others have said, some have dietary restrictions and don’t eat red meat or seafood. I would also offer a vegetarian option because some people don’t eat meat. My FH is a vegetarian so I’m always thinking of these things.

I would ask your caterer for suggestions. I think 2 entrée choices are fine but you need a vegetarian option for those who request it. For me, I'd have a hard time choosing between crab cakes and pork tenderloin but I'm not invited - LOL! I would consider a fish instead of crab cakes, and if you want crab cakes, have them as an appetizer or at the cocktail hour.

My wedding was family style meaning guests could take some food from both entrees which was steak and everything crusted tuna. We did have a vegetarian option for those who didn't eat either and there were no complaints.

I think you should have at least one “safe” option, and I’d opt for the chicken. As PP advised, many people don’t eat red meat and I know many who are just finicky about seafood lol. We don’t know any vegetarians so I feel that’s more of a “know your crowd” option, but you may want to do three choices for entrees; crab cakes, pork tenderloin, and chicken. This way there’s something for everyone!

My venue package included 2 entree choices plus a silent vegetarian option; we went with a flat iron steak and a sea bass. IMO, you can't go wrong with beef and fish. I think crab cakes and pork is a very odd combo. I would do beef & fish, or chicken & fish, or all 3 if you can do 3, plus a silent veg.

Personally - I would love those two options, and so would my FH and all of my family and his family. I think this falls under knowing your crowd. If you are having a smaller wedding, and know the dietary preferences and tastes of your guests, then stick with the two you want. However - if you are having a larger wedding and aren't sure about their preferences I would add in a chicken dish and a vegetarian dish to be safe.

I was just going to put "please inform us of any dietary restrictions" on the the RSVP card to cover vegetarians and then have an "off-menu" option made for them. Should I list the vegetarian option for everyone?

This is why I ask you guys these things! You answer questions I didn't even know I had 😂

In this case I think you really need to know the way your guests eat. I personally need a lot of alternatives because I have vegetarians, vegans, glutton free, non red meat eaters, etc. If your going to do this you need to make sure there is a line for dietary restrictions and make sure your caterer can accommodate them even if you choose these two options.

I don't think so! I think those are good options. Adding a steak or chicken option wouldn't hurt, since some religions don't eat pork? And a lot of people don't like seafood? I think it just depends on your crowd

I totally get you not wanting to offer the standard "chicken" plate but it is a good idea to offer a veggie option in addition to the crab cakes or pork. We did steak and pasta.

There are also so many weird allergies these days we're glad we put that line on our RSVP card because we changed our salad course to a simple garden salad (no nuts or cheese due to allergies) and had the dressings on each table. Whew.

We did have 1 person who was vegetarian + gluten free so we had just a place of veggies for her.

FH and I are deathly allergic to shellfish. I don't eat pork and FH is muslim. We wouldn't be able to eat at your wedding. LOL

It's different but I dont think that is a problem. I would just make sure that you also have a vegetarian option. Honestly I have loved the food more at weddings that had something other than just steak and chicken. The last wedding I went to had tacos, which were amazing, another one of my friends did a pig roast and I lived that.

Definitely make sure to allow for alternatives. With the diabetics and my mother having an allergy to vinegar of all things, my menu is taking on more of a backyard BBQ buffet, where people can pick and choose between 2-3 options for aps, main, side, and dessert.

My venue lets me pick 3 total, we will do chicken of some sort and who knows what else lol. They have normal things to pick from.

It might be odd but if you know that is what your guests like I say go for it. I like the idea of it being unique and who doesnt like crap cakes?

I have also been to weddings where there was only steak/pork or chicken. Unless you have a ton of people coming that are vegetarians I dont think it is necessary. But that is just me lol

We only have 2 vegetarians and 3 vegans coming out of 70 people, and we are still making sure they have an option. So yes, even if you don’t have a ton of vegetarians coming, you still need to make sure you have an option for them.
