Master of Ceremony?

Brittney, on October 30, 2017 at 3:13 PM

I have been in a couple weddings this year and they did not have a master of ceremony. My FMIL has been telling me all about how her brother does a great job and how he would love to do it. Has anyone had a master of ceremony and can tell me anything about it?

I've never heard Master of Ceremony in the context of a wedding. Your officiant guides everyone through the ceremony, and your DJ announces the events of the reception. I don't think you need a Master of Ceremony, unless she's using that term in place of DOC? The DOC typically coordinates vendor deliveries and setup, as well as making sure everything stays on track.

My nephew had a friend emcee their reception. He was in control of the ipod music for the ceremony, then he welcomed everyone at the dinner and introduced the speakers (speeches). They had a live band, but the friend also did their grand entrance announcement and got the party started. Then the band took over from there. He did a great job but does a lot of public speaking and was very comfortable doing it!!

Like PPs said, the MC (usually your DJ) announces dinner, special dances, etc. I went to one wedding where there was no DJ and a huge lag between the end of the meal and cake cutting. I completely missed out on the cake cutting because no one announced it and the couple cut it in a different room. Lots can be said about that one. But, as long as you aren't throwing any curve balls you should be fine.

@mrsmack a DOC could be what she is referring to and she just doesn't have the right term.

@Brittney, no matter what the responsibilities of this imagined role would be, why would you guys want your fiance's uncle to be working your wedding? Unless you're not planning on inviting him as a guest.

@SleepytheDwarf it's not that we want him working the ceremony. FMIL just keeps talking about how he did it at FHs brother's wedding and would love to do it at ours.

So tell her thanks, but you'd rather have him enjoy himself as a guest. The end.

MC's may be more common here than elsewhere. The MC is often a close friend of the family, someone who is comfortable with public speaking and handling people, and being asked to MC is an honor.

So many DJ's are just so cheesy. It's nice to have someone MC at the dinner to handle the task with a modicum of dignity.

That's a primary reason why you interview a DJ, to make sure their MC style matches what you want.

Yeah, as @muriel said, i've been to tons of weddings where the MC is a friend or family member and essentially considered one of your VIPs. we asked one of H's pals to MC our reception--he gave a welcome and announced our speeches, dinner, etc and turned our music on and off (we did the iPod DJ route and have zero regrets about it, but i've also seen MCs at weddings with regular DJs).
