Marrying abroad

Morgan, on December 15, 2019 at 10:06 PM Posted in Planning 0 4
Me and my fiance want to get married in Germany. We want to have a propper catholic wedding (we're both religious) but we want to have it in Europe. And we old have about $16000 to do it all. Does anyone have any tips or advice?

From what I've read a good portion of churches don't like to open up to foreigners because they think they'll trash the church and only want to be there for the pictures.

You will most likely have to get the marriage certificate in the states and symbolic ceremony abroad.

We planned on signing the real papers here and going there for the catholic requirements.

I'd start by talking to your local priest. He can likely give you some idea on what the church's rules are on getting married in a foreign country, and also on what German churches might be open to it. And unless you want the ceremony in German, you'd have to figure out whether there are English-speaking priests you could use.

Also, you'll need to research the German requirements. Germany doesn't recognize a religious marriage, so you'd need to have a civil wedding first. You'd have to figure out the mechanics of getting a marriage license and having a civil ceremony before your Catholic ceremony.
