Married without a license?

Is that an issue at all? The religious ceremony is really just for family and friends and the public proclamation of our commitment, but I guess it's fine to just get the papers after, right?

UPDATE: Resolved. Thanks everyone.

Yes, an Officiant wouldn't touch a wedding without one.

Claudia, if he could at least figure out a day he'll be out early, could you go meet him at base and go to the courthouse/clerk's office nearest the base? Your license doesn't have to be the county you're getting married in, so as long as his base in VA that might save some time getting there during business hours?

Your license **doesn't** have to be in the same county provided you're in VA? Is that correct?

In Illinois, the county totally matters.

No. I got mine in the county I live in and married in a different county. It does not matter.

Yes, I did the same as Stephanie. I actually applied for the license online (Fairfax County) so the actually going to the courthouse part took 15 minutes including waiting.

No one I know will touch this without specifically altering the language so that your guests know this is a 'commitment in heart and soul, but not a legal commitment at this point." If that's all you want, then it's fine, but you won't be having any language that suggests you got married.

This is a priority, or it should be. I know the military has benefits for married personnel but you have to have that license. I find it really interesting that when it becomes inconvenient to get this done, it becomes an afterthought.

Claudia if you are in VA (which I think i remember correctly you are) you can go to any courthouse in the state and actually get your license the same day. VA has no waiting time and like Lara said you could also do all the paperwork online so when you get there its a quick process. Since your wedding is around a holiday just keep in mind courthouse hours might be a little shorter.

Here the link to Loudoun County (not sure what county you are in) http://www.loudoun.gov/index.aspx?nid=1162

Idk what state you are in but it definitely matters what county in Ohio. You HAVE to obtain the license from the same county. Also, for whatever reason, they only issue them on certain Fridays in various cities courts around the county and you HAVE to make a reservation online here and bring your reservation #

As someone who is marrying someone in the military, you should be very concerned with getting the legal documentation. Everyone else has already said it, but yes, you should get the marriage license and make it priority number 1.

I have checked 2 states... md, the one I'm getting married in and wv, the one I am living in and only ONE of you have to go get the license! He just has to sign it. I'm confused on why this is an issue?

Angie -because she is not getting married in MD or WV, she is getting married in VA, and both have to appear.
