Married on a holiday weekend?

FutureMrsR, on January 5, 2017 at 1:31 PM Posted in Planning 0 50

Would you attend a wedding set the Saturday before Memorial Day? We are very patriotic and were hoping to incorporate that, but my grandparents (the 2 only OOT guests) think it's too hard to travel that weekend. It's a six hour drive from their house to my hometown. I was thinking they would come down on that Thursday, so I feel like traffic won't be that bad that day...? What do you all think?

My solution was to just do it the week before Memorial Day for their sake, but one of my best friends has a family wedding to attend that day and I really want her at mine as well. So now I'm back trying to figure out if Memorial Day weekend is feasible!

Thoughts? (p.s. Venue is a non-issue; we truly can decide whichever day we'd like)

Lots of people like holiday weekend weddings like Memorial/Labor day because it gives them some more recovery time. Have the g-rents come up Thursday if they're concerned and get them a place to stay.

We're getting married the day before memorial day. My mom suggested it since everyone is likely not working that Monday, so travel will be easier on everyone, plus an extra day to re-cooperate from all the wedding fun. Smiley smile It's a personal preference for sure, but I think it makes it easier to have an extra day for guests to be able to travel and not feel rushed to get back home.

I don't see a problem with it. We're currently considering the Sunday of presidents day weekend. That way we get the venue pricing for Sunday but most people don't have to work the next day.

We are getting married on the 4th of July- yes it's a Tuesday but it gives everyone time over the long weekend to travel and visit .

We are doing a brunch wedding on that Sunday, same day as @MrsNutter. Reception will be over by about 3, so folks can still take off and enjoy a bit of vacation if they'd like.

I have read in a few articles that it's not great to get married on a holiday weekend because people make plans for vacationing then.

    Here's one I saw recently: https://www.theknot.com/content/wedding-dates-to-avoid

@MGB Date twins!!! That's a great idea, I never even thought about having a brunch wedding to give people even more time to enjoy their vacation!

We got married the Friday before Memorial Day. We had some declines due to the holiday weekend but not many. You are not going to be able to find a date that works for everyone so you are going to have to decide what is more important.

We are getting married on Saturday, July 1st; the 4th being the following Tuesday. We cleared it with all our VIPs first but everyone we have talked to has been fine with it so far.

My wedding is on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. FH family is from OOT so it's easy for them to come up Saturday and go home Monday. It's a 9 hour drive for them.

Update: Told them this and they said they have season passes for a racetrack and there's a race that day and don't want to miss it...they go every year. And there's a race the weekend before and after, too.

They're my only grandparents and we see them once a year for like 2 days. I guess they're just coming up with excuses not to attend. :/

Thanks for the advice all. I'll just do it when I want, and they can come if they want or not.

    ETA- clarity

Keep in mind if you're sending out STDs you may want to send them a bit earlier since it's a holiday weekend. You may also encounter graduation parties. My friend got married memorial day weekend and was surprised by the amount of no rsvps because of grad parties.

I think its a good idea..mainly because I am having mine the day prior of a holiday. But my friends and family are traveling from Indiana and Cali to Orlando. We have found great flight and car rental deals along with promotions for villas. Plus most say they get the additional day off monday to travel back or spend the day at the disney or universal parks

I personally dislike going to weddings over holiday weekends. We went to two weddings last year over 4th of July weekend. FH and I usually go to his family's cottage in Michigan that weekend so it was kind of a bummer to miss that

I think of Memorial Day as a pretty low key holiday and don't have any traditional recurring plans that happen on it, so I think it's an ideal weekend for a wedding because it gives most of your guests automatic extra time off/travel time. Same with 4th of July.

Thanksgiving would be a completely different story.

Huge no to Memorial Day for us, but that's because it's our anniversary and have family traditions.

For our family Memorial day isn't a super huge deal. If I make the trip home to see my parents, we usually just go out for a movie. Plus, there will be one next year. Someone's wedding not so much.

It's unfortunate your grandparents already have the race tickets...do you have your venue booked? It's unfortunate, but the thing with holiday weekends is people may have plans already they can't cancel and you have to be okay with that. If you're not, which is totally fine, then move the date to one that doesn't land on a holiday weekend.

It really depends on where you are located and how many people have to travel. My best friend is getting married Memorial weekend but has few out of town guests. Hotels for those guests though are hyper inflated because it is in St. Pete. In your case, it sounds like there are more pros than cons so I would definitely be appreciative of the extra recovery day.
