Married in an odd-numbered year is supposedly unfavorable???

Tara, on November 24, 2011 at 2:57 AM Posted in Planning 0 16

I was talking with my aunt on the phone the other day, she was asking what our current plans are. I told her that because of money (or lack there of) we have to push it back to next year. Trying to make me feel better, she said, "Oh you don't want to get married in an odd-numbered year, anyway!"

I wondered if there was some folklore I never heard of before. A lot of googling got me little other than a lot of state law codes and election info, but I did see this article, which stated, "The only problem so far seems to be booking weddings on odd-numbered days. Chinese have a custom of marrying on even-numbered days: The word for "even" is the same as the word for "pair" while the word for "odd" is the same as the word for "single." No one wants to get married on an odd-numbered date for fear that it will mean bad luck for the marriage."

Has anyone ever heard of this odd numbered day/year stuff?

No, but i can totally believe people thinking it. People in this world are so superstitious and will believe anything some people tell them. Sorry but i have no superstitions. I will open an umbrella inside and walk under ladders if i want and do not run around frantically to find wood to knock on.

I'm a little weird when it comes to numbers not for superstitious purposes just I like how some of them look.

@Ednabugg: That's okay. I figure that not only was our year odd, but NotFroofy and I are pretty odd as well. ;-)

Well I never heard of it, but if you are superstitious you can always add the numbers up to get an even number.

@Ednabugg, I know, right? At least we got the month right :-( Do you think it would help?

Asian beliefs about numbers are also the reason why hotels in Vegas don't have floors that start in 4. I would still stay on such floor.

Then half of all marriages are unlucky, I don't buy it, people make marriages work, not wedding dates.

@Fun bride T., that's because all your dates are even LOL!

It's just another superstition, that's all.

I wouldn't call it superstition, maybe OCD...but I am more drawn to even numbered years...I always seem to have better years when they are even...can't wait for 2012!

The word for number 4 sounds the same as the word for *death* in Chinese, so it's considered unlucky. Well, in China, that is.

People have all sorts of superstitions about weddings.

We broke many of these like not seeing the bride before the wedding.

When my husband lost his wedding ring he was googling it to see if there was something to say about that being bad luck.

Totally agree with the previous comments, people ruin marriages not dates you got married on or seeing your spouse before the ceremony or even accidentally loosing your wedding ring.

Oh and it is supposed to be good luck to have rain on your wedding day, my brother had rain and was divorced within 5 years, same thing with my mom. I'm calling BS.

People make up the good luck shit to make you feel better when things don't go your way and the bad luck things to make people feel bad for not doing something they see as being right.

I'm with Mrs. D. Did you ever hear about that it's good luck to get pooped on by a bird? That's definitely just to make you feel better.

I'm not really superstitious, but FH is, believe it or not. There are certain things he always does to comply. hahaha I didn't even suggest a first look bc he would not go for that.
