Married at a Church?

Lynn, on June 3, 2019 at 1:06 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 23
My future MIL asked me if people still get married at churches. I really had to think about that one. I am sure people still do, but almost all of the weddings I've attended at the last five years have had the ceremony at the wedding venue. What are your experiences?

Ours has been about 50/50, but both FH and I grew up in the church and attended Catholic schools so it hasn’t really surprised us that some of our friends/family chose to marry in the church.

I haven't been to a church wedding in 13 years.

I have been to weddings where it's at a church but it's really up to you. I am doing mine at a church and then reception is elsewhere because the church itself is meaningful to me.

I live in Texas, where lots of folks are Christian - there are definitely people who get married in a church, whether it's the one they attend or not Smiley smile I would guess it's because of the traditional vibe, and beautiful details like stained glass windows, candles, polished wood, etc. And a lot of churches have space for a small reception!

I got married in a church, but I haven't been to many other church weddings lately. I think the hype of all inclusive venues have taken over. People decide to have ceremonies at the reception site to make it easier on guests. We entertained the thought, but decided we would have rather be married in our house of worship than some random ceremony site.

I've been to 7 weddings in the past 3 years and 5 were in a church. Our wedding will also be in a church.

The last few weddings I’ve been to have been in a church. I am also getting married in a church. Definitely still a thing.

I’ve been to 3 church weddings in the past 3 years and ours will also take place in a church. Honestly the church weddings I’ve been to have been to make the parents happy, same reason we’re doing it too.

A lot of young people do not attend church regularly anymore, so there's a lot of cases where a church might not let you get married unless you attend.
My area is very Catholic and unless you both are baptized, communion, confirmed, and do counseling within the Catholic Church you'll be denied, most people simply don't have time for all of that, especially if you didn't do confirmation as a teenager.
I know people still do get married in their house of worship, but overall I'd say venues have taken over as it is easier to plan if you're not actively involved in your faith before hand.

I have the opposite experience. All but one of the weddings I have been to, happened at a church.

We're getting married at FH's church. I've been to both church and non-church weddings over the past few years. Now that I think about it it might be about an even split.

We found a beautiful historic chapel at a church in Franklin, TN (where we are getting married - we live in Memphis, TN), with huge gorgeous glass stained windows. We will have our ceremony there and then our reception is in the ballroom of a hotel nearby!

I've only attended 3 weddings in my life and only 1 of them has been in a church. My own wedding is not at a church. So there still is some but I don't think its as common as it used to be.

For the weddings I've been to as an adult (all in the last 5 years), it has been 6 church ceremonies (including our own) and 5 non-church ceremonies. We're in Kansas though so that may make a difference.

About 95% of weddings I've attended were at a church. I'm planning on doing the same!

Of the 8 weddings I've been to in the last 6 years, it was a 50/50 split -- but even of those not in churches, most were at least somewhat religious. I'm in the Midwest like PP's, so that probably skews it. We're getting married at the Catholic church where I recently completed RCIA. Smiley smile

We are marrying in church. But, other than my FH and I- I can't say that any of our family members or friends have married in a church. The only ones are his parents (30 years ago) and my grandparents (50 years ago).

Every wedding I've ever been to was in a church, or at least at the venue chapel! Then again, I've only been to five weddings :') I'm in the UK so I'm not sure how culturally transferrable this is though.
