Marriage License Woes (Advice Needed)***Update In Comments***

Mrs.Thornes, on June 26, 2014 at 10:49 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 16

FH and I went to get our marriage license yesterday and when we got home we noticed that the suffix at the end of my Dad's last name is wrong. It says that he's a jr. which is wrong. My brother is the 2nd. They are not jr. and 2nd. My brother just has the numeral for 2 at the end of his. I called and the lady I spoke with said per conversation with her attach a note when I send it in to take it off. I didn't know if I should send it in after I get married to get it fixed or before so I asked twice. They said to send it in after. Do you think that is fine? Am I worrying over nothing? Thanks!

I would send it in after - you don't want to risk not having it. Get what she said in writing though - maybe write her an e-mail asking her to explain what you need to do exactly.

I agree with Ashley - as long as you have in writing the instructions they gave you, you should be fine sending it in after. However, if you are that concerned and have the time to go in now - just go in now and do it. It only took us 5 days to get the license so you have time to get a new one if your timeline is the same.

It's always easier to get it fixed before than after. If they screwed it up, they should fix it on the spot.

Celia I called her when I got home and she told me to send it in with a note saying per conversation with her to drop the JR. I don't know why she didn't say bring it in and we will fix it. Katie yea I was thinking of doing that I just don't want to have to pay $40 again.

I would just do it now. In my state, after you are married a change on the license requires a court order. Id rather pay another application fee than court fees.

Its best to get it fixed before. I know here in IL u cant get married if anything is wrong. They misspelled someone last name and they couldnt get married until they got it fixed. They fixed it the same day and was able to get married.

If it is their mistake, you should not have to pay for a new license.

Brides -- check out the license before you leave the courthouse. I have found several mistakes over the years (groom's first & middle names reversed, names spelled wrong, etc.).

You shouldn't have to pay to fix their mistake. I know in NJ, if it goes to the state, it can take months to fix.

Fix it before you get married, it could end up you're not legally married, if the officiant signs the wrong one and you need it fixed you may have to get married again...

I know in Baltimore it's $10 and a letter mailed in to fix any mistake you don't catch before leaving the office so I checked mine twice and had the wrong address so I asked them to change it on the spot.

Betty, that's not true. I just went through an issue like this (not with one of my couples). The licenses can always be fixed; the problem is that it's four times the hassle and time.

Take care of it now and keep us posted.

When we got ours they said any mistakes that might be made not to cross off or try to fix, just submit a request to amend after the ceremony.

Thanks everyone! I spoke to her numerous times yesterday and she told me it happens all the time and to not worry. She told me to send it in after we are married. The marriage would still be legal because the only thing that's wrong is the prefix at the end of my father's name not the whole name. She said she already has a new one anyway just waiting on me to send it in. I will not have to pay.
