Marriage License PSA

When you go to apply for your license, make sure you double, triple, and quadruple check everything on your form! There were about 8 different mistakes on ours including, name, DOB, state we lived and were born in.... We caught everything, so it was fine, I just hate to think of someone not noticing...

Check, check, and recheck!

ETA: picture, because I'm basic like that

Question- we live in Virginia but are getting married in NC so do we need to get the marriage license there or where we live?

We didn't expect the marriage license to be pretty--it's pretty much like any other official state form. However, since we had a Jewish wedding, we ended up with a ketubah (formal Jewish marriage contract), which is quite nice-looking indeed, and still hangs on our wall.

    That's beautiful, 2d!

Every state is different, many have waiting periods between when you apply and when you get it.

In NJ, every town issues them, and each town is slightly different. I always tell my couples to call the issuing office at least a month, if not more, ahead to see if they need an appointment to apply. (I have one town here that has a six week waiting list just to apply...) You don't want to run out of time.

In most places, you need specific ID and proof of divorce/widowhood so either put your hands on those documents or order them from Vital chek (it's online, but it does take some time). You can also usually get your birth certificate from the town where you were born (not every clerk requires that). Same with divorce/death certificates.

Just don't leave it to the last minute!

For those of you applying/completing a form online: in Florida, at least, the 3-day waiting period doesn't start until you actually show up at the courthouse to sign the form and swear the info is correct. Some couples have run into a problem with that.
