Marriage License PSA

Sarah, on April 14, 2016 at 4:02 PM Posted in Planning 0 29

When you go to apply for your license, make sure you double, triple, and quadruple check everything on your form! There were about 8 different mistakes on ours including, name, DOB, state we lived and were born in.... We caught everything, so it was fine, I just hate to think of someone not noticing this until the big day!

Check, check, and recheck!

ETA: picture, because I'm basic like that

Someone mentioned on another thread earlier they name was wrong on theirs and it's been a mess to deal with.

My parent's marriage certificate has my aunt's name wrong as the witness - her name is Peggy (this is not a nickname), but the certificate says Margaret. The person completing it insisted that Peggy is a nickname for Margaret and the "formal" name must be used on the certificate. This happened in 1969. They would not change it even though my aunt's birth certificate says Peggy (not Margaret).

    Fortunately, everything else is correct...

That's what we always tell couples when they come to get their license from the courthouse I work at. It's ingrained in our brains to make sure bride & groom check everything on the marriage license

In FL, there is a 3-day waiting period for FL residents. Apparently, the computer automatically puts the effective date as 3 days after the issue date. This is a problem for non-residents who do NOT have a waiting period (their effective date is the same as the issue date). I tell my couples to check it before leaving the counter -- after one of my couples had a lot of aggravation & expense to get it sorted out.

FH just got ours a couple of weeks ago, and I hadn't even thought of double checking it. So I just did, and it looks fine. Whew!

Emily, we got an ugly official form and a pretty commemorative certificate that has no legal standing.

Our clerk had us check the first printout for typos, made corrections and reprinted it, then moved forward. I'm going to go triple check it now though, just in case.

How long does it take to receive it? We're going in on Tuesday for ours. Our wedding is in May.

In FL, you get the license the same day you go in. The license is only good for 60 days here. The legal form is not pretty here either. At the top is the Application to Marry, in the middle is the Marriage License, and at the bottom is the Marriage Certificate portion that I complete. So, I make a decorative, non-official certificate for my couples.

Depends on your state, SoontobeMrs.N. I'm in Oregon and we left the office with the license, but there's a three day wait period before it's valid. The certificate you use for name changes and stuff afterward varies, too; I think it's about 3-4 weeks here.
