Making my own dress and losing weight

Alanna, on November 12, 2016 at 7:42 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 17

Well I'm excited! I just made my first purchase for our wedding: A pattern for my dress, for $1 at Joann's (patterns are on sale until today). Next time the Casa special occasion fabric is on sale, I'm getting the fabric. But on my way home, I had a thought..

I have no idea when I should start making it. I want to start it early, so I don't have to stress when we get closer, but my FH and I are using this as motivation to get in shape, since we've been slacking big time, and I don't know how small my waist will get. Any advice beside making it bigger and then making alterations closer to?

I would recommend going ahead and making it. That's the biggest part. It's way easier to take it in some when you lose weight rather than trying to scramble in the last few weeks or whenever to make the whole thing and possibly make a mistake because you're rushing. That's just me though Smiley smile I'm no where near talented enough to make my own dress lol

Alright, thank you! Smiley smile I'll probably get started on it by the New Year, so I can get it done before my nosy FH moves in with me, so he doesn't get to see it Smiley winking

Casa collection? This is your wedding dress, remember that.

I made my SIL's wedding dress. I DID use the Casa collection fabrics, but largely because I had no choices with the budget I was given and the colors she wanted (silver with contrasting trim and lace sleeves, but all in the same color).

She ended up loving her dress, but it did NOT look anywhere near as extravagant as a store-bought dress because of the fabric. She chose the crepe for the main body of the dress, the matte satin for the contrasting trim at the hem and off the shoulder neckline, and the lace for bell sleeves. It was beautiful, but I swore after that I would never use the Casa fabrics for anything more than cosplay uses again, because it just wasn't wedding dress quality.

I should also ask: how versed are you at sewing more complicated pieces? Boning, for instance, and doing it in such a manner that it is structurally significant (supporting the breasts and slimming the torso versus just providing structure to the dress shape)? How confident are you in your skills to do lining, hide seams, and match lace patterns if you choose to use lace? How comfortable are you with hand beading and designing a beading pattern from scratch? How confident are you in putting in an invisible zipper, OR a corset back and creating the corset "ribbon" ties from bias-cut matte satin or matching cloth? You didn't indicate your skill level, which is a little concerning.

I'm making mine too!!!! ^.^ Dress buddy!! I don't have a pattern though. DO have all of my fabric. I also used Casa. Also from Joann (I work there...) Eggnog crepebacked satin, lining, etc. Go ahead and start it. After you lose the weight, you can always alter it. That's my plan! Plus! Corset backs give you a little wiggle room for sizes.

Ooh yay! People about as crazy as I am to attempt making her own dress. Everyone thinks it's a lot to take on. But it's not really going to be a common type wedding dress and will be in pieces. This is mainly to help compensate for the face that I will be under going weight loss surgery soon for medical reasons, so by the time next fall comes around, I'll be much much much smaller. So I need to think of something that will be easy to adjust without loosing the end result look. I'm just going to be sure I make a prototype in muslin or even some on sale and/or cheap fabric similar to what I want the final to be so as to be able to make a custom pattern and also easily and quickly adjust it.

My real craziness is that I am contemplate much much more sewing than that. And that on top of all the other DIY elements for this wedding. Smiley smile

MNA, I've been sewing since I was 13 (28 now), between cosplay, larping, renn faires, and not being able to afford nice gothic clothing in high school, and I sew commissions all the time. My roommate, also one of my bridesmaids, and my maid of honor are also experienced seamstresses.

That is awesome that you are making your own dress! It will be that much more special and meaningful to you! I would start asap, and do alterations later, if you end up losing a ton of weight you can always rip some seems out and recut the pieces smaller and refit together

@Alanna: Then go for it. I've done a ton of cosplay and intricate sewing and have for years as well.

I still wouldn't have taken this on, BUT this is one rare area where you do what works for you.
