Makeup for Oily Skin

Private, on November 24, 2014 at 12:07 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 26

I have very oily skin and bad acne scars. Would regular makeup or airbrush makeup be better for me? I did some research and found conflicting information about airbrush makeup for oily skin; some said it is the best option while others said it is horrible for oily skin. What are your personal experiences (please indicate the type of skin you have)? Any pictures? Thanks!

Im not much help on the makeup but Ive been using coconut oil as a moisturiser for about a month and it has almost completely faded my acne scars and melasma... im going to try dabbing lemon oil on the remaining scars to see if that finishes them off. Can def recommended coconut oil, perhaps just try it at night if your skin is already oily though. Smiley smile

Thank you Mrs. T, I will definitely try the coconut oil. I always feel so self conscious with my scars so I am willing to try anything at least once.

I have the same problem. Just started using Palmers skin therapy oil to fade them. I don't wear makeup. I am doing airbrush and have my make up trial this Saturday. I'll let you know how it goes!

Makeup wise I think the key will be using a good primer, and setting your foundation with powder and a good setting spray.

I have the same issues as you - I was on Accutane for a while earlier this year and it helped a lot with oiliness as well as scarring; if that's something you may be interested in talk to a doc.

But, aside from that, I have recently discovered "Becca" foundation and products at Ulta and Sephora and my God, they are incredible. The primer does an amazing job at smoothing skin, really helps with oil all day long and also helps reduce redness. The primer alone is a miracle. The foundation is buildable - one pump is all I need for a medium coverage that lasts 16 hours a day. It's really something you should check out. I use the primer and foundation from Becca, and then I use my normal cheaper Revlon Matte Powder & Physician's Formula Blush/Bronzer to set everything. For my face-worth of makeup it's about $100 every 6 month for my primer, foundation, powder, blush/bronzer.

If you have an Ulta nearby, go in and they can do a whole face of Becca on you. It really is quite an awesome product and it's fairly new. I've read nothing but amazing reviews on it too. I've been wearing it for about 3 months now and I haven't had any breakouts or issues adjusting to it either.

I agree with @Monana! My skin has been extra oily forever. I discovered the oil free primer from BareMinerals and will never go without a primer now! I haven't been able to find anything similar in stores so if anyone has suggestions I am open to them! It works miracles for preventing oil - even on really humid and gross days.

When I was 25 I had the worst acne of my life. It was about the time I got a real job with insurance so I went to the dermatologist. I would go every 4 weeks and have a glycolic peel with extractions (it sounds horrible but it’s not).

In addition to the every 4 week peels, I was on Aldactone. I was afraid of Accutane (lots of horror stories – do your research if you’re considering it). So this is what my dermatologist recommended for me. Aldactone is actually used to treat people with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and it is used to even out their hormones. The derm said an awesome “side effect” of the drug is that it clears up skin issues. They were right! I was on Aldactone for about a year while getting every 4 week peels and my skin was amazing. I used to get the really painful cystic acne under the skin and I no longer do. I don’t even get the little surface pimples.

I would recommend going to the dermatologist to anyone. I think the visits without insurance were about $125 but I am sure it depends on where you are.

I do, however, have “ice pick scars”. I hate that term Smiley sad I am not sure what to do about them.

@MrsT – Did the coconut oil work for physical scars or just the discoloration in them?

Try oil cleansing. There is a company called Fat Face that makes some amazing products. I have been oil cleansing for about three months now, and I have fewer pimples, my skin isn't oily, and the texture has improved a lot. It sounds totally backward, but once your skin adjusts, its absolutely wonderful.

I have oily skin too and was going to go with airbrush makeup but then I decided to DIY and just invest in quality products for the wedding. I would definitely suggest a good primer and/or powder. I haven't found a primer yet that I've loved, but for powders I've heard good things about the Make Up For Ever HD powder which photographs really well, so that's a plus. I'm still stuck between Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation or the Mat Velvet+ from Make Up For Ever. They're both really great for oily skin and are long wearing.

I would highly recommend using traditional foundation instead of airbrush. Airbrush just doesn't work well on very oily skin as it tends to slip after a few hours of wear.

Make Up For Ever's Matte Velvet foundation is my favorite for brides that are really oily and want full coverage. Apply it without primer using a rung out sponge like the beauty blender. Lightly powder the t-zone after with a fluffy brush.

My skin is SUPER oily and I did airbrush for my cousins wedding, it was flawless all day/night. It was still pretty at midnight, I didn't even want to wash my face. My daily make up I use Mac BB cream/primer and their matchmaster foundation. For my wedding I will be doing airbrush.

Edited to attach pic: This pic was taken at about 10PM, got the make-up done about 12PM

I have oily skin. For my everyday wear, I use Smashbox primer, Smashbox CC cream (I have rosacea) and Urban Decay All Nighter setting spray. It's by far the best combination of products that I've found.

I am a makeup artist with oily skin and acne scars. Contrary to what others are posting, airbrush makeup is your best bet, but there are several varieties. The ONLY one to use is Dinair Camouflage or Glamour. Here's why. They are water-based, not silicone based, so the foundation dries on contact. Use NOTHING underneath. Apply to clean, dry skin. The foundation is very matte and will stay that way with a matte setting loose powder like the one from INGLOT. Do not use Makeup Forever HD unless you are a professional....it is tricky to use unless you know what you are doing. Stay away from ALL MINERAL Powders as they will all look oily eventually. Your oil problem is internal and cannot be managed by the right makeup. See a dermatologist. For regular foundation, use Makeup Forever face and body. Read my reviews from past happy brides about their makeup lasting...it was all Dinair airbrush. Listen to FutureMrsC above. The unhappy airbrush users probably had the following used on them: Temptu, OCC, MAC, Luminess. Those of us with oily skin cannot go traditional routes like other brides can.

My skin tends to get oily and shinny, well it use to! For the wedding day I had airbrush make up and highly recommend it! As for everyday makeup I use Naked - Urban Decay.

A photographer actually told me to never wear any type of makeup that has SPF in it for pictures as makeup can say oil free all day but if SPF is in it that means some form of oil is in it. So I use a foundation that has no SPF in it and my pictures never look shiny and since I have been using this makeup my skin doesn't get oily like it use to! Best change in my skin since I was a teenager!

I would see a dermatologist. I had acne scars as recently as February this year and most of them are gone now because she put me on a prescription face cream.

I use Mac, which seems to last most of the day without a setting spray. My skin starts to get a little bit shiny about 4 or 5 hours after, but I can pat loose powder on to reset and it's fine.
