Tiffani, on June 27, 2021 at 10:16 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 16
Hello,

I had a trial hair and makeup and was unhappy with the outcome. I signed a contract,do you guys negotiate on paying for the trial but at least getting the money back that was used to secure book the date?I am trying to be respectful, but am quite unsatisfied with the outcome of the hair and makeup. Please advise, thanks in advance.
I am wondering how to word things.

It will depend on what the contract you signed says. If it says non-refundable deposit, they do not have to refund you anything, whether you use their services or not. That doesn’t mean you can’t express to them your dissatisfaction and see what they say.

It says nonrefundable but also says satisfaction guaranteed. Would you say there is wiggle room there?

Generally you never book a hair or make up artist for your wedding until you've already had the trial and are happy with their work. A good hair or make up artist will agree to hold your wedding date pending the trial, and if they don't agree to such, it's a huge red flag.

Whether or not you have a right to terminate the contract will depend entirely on your contract. A few words extracted from the contract isn't very helpful - try look at the entirety of the document and what it says regarding your deposit, termination for convenience or change of mind, and your rights if you're unhappy with their work.

I suspect they will counter by saying they will make the changes to accommodate your concerns/things you didn’t like about the makeup. If so, I would request another trial free of charge to see if they can deliver.

Interesting to know. I feel stuck with this contract now and certain that because I signed it she may not refund me even if I express my dissatisfaction after the fact.

Yeah I think so too, I have a feeling it may go the route of her trying to make things better for the next time. But I just feel like it’s not going to work out. I am not really willing to give it another chance even if it is free.

How much money are you set to lose?

Your remedies are entirely dependent on the contract along with any consumer protections applicable where you live.

I agree with Ava that they will likely try to accommodate your concerns but if you are able to negotiate another trial free of charge and explain to them what you didn't like, it may be a suitable solution rather than lose the money altogether.

I don’t blame you. I wouldn’t mess around with make up either - it’s too huge a thing on your wedding day! There’s a good chance you will have to forfeit the deposit then. I would still ask though, cause you never know! Worst case scenario, it’s better to forfeit the deposit and get makeup you love from someone else! Make sure you do a trial run before signing another contract though!

Try to get another trial that is free and be very clear about what you like and don’t like. Did you take inspiration photos with you?. How much will you lose by breaking the contract? If you decide to look elsewhere, get a trial before you book them and make sure you are happy before you leave.

Yes we went over inspiration photos and I even went over work she did and was like I love this! I will lose ~$150. Yes, I think I may just have my sister do it. I just thought it’d be nice to be glammed up! But I think we may just be better off doing it ourselves.

Yes, I’ll see how to ask for it back if not I’ll just count it as a learning experience to not sign something without a trial run. Thanks!

Unless you are in a tiny town, there are other options for hair/makeup artists. Where are you located/ getting married? Take a look at Instagram for your area. The only thing with DIY makeup is most people don’t own makeup designed for high definition photography and you will need a heavier hand with it than everyday.

Use this as a guide: “Hey I wasn’t happy with my trial before (explain in detail what you didn’t like and what you did). Can I get another trial free of charge to see if we can get on the same page? If not, then I’m going to look at another artist. Am I able to get my deposit back in the situation that I don’t like the second trial?”

Actually, no that is not true. They don't hold ANY DATE until a contract is secured. So it's up to you to take that leap of faith and have a trial before booking. The goal is to plan way ahead so you have time to find a good makeup artist. If you plan ahead you have more of a chance of finding the makeup and hair artist you want. A good makeup artist knows you would not hold a date if not contract is signed.
