Maintaining your wedding dress clean for the big day

Daisy, on August 15, 2019 at 2:05 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 20

Hey girls,

I have my dress already in my home and im about 8 months out. the room sometimes gets too hot where I have the dress, im worried it will turn yellow. the dress is inside one of those huge bags that bridal boutiques sell you. is that good enough to keep it from turning yellow?i am taking it to a seamstress in about 2 months for alterations. any advice on how you are taking care of your dresses?

xoxo,

Daze

I think it takes longer to turn yellow than a few months unless you or someone else in the house smokes.

I have had my dress in my closet for the last 8 months and it still looks like the day I brought it home. I think you will be fine.

Your dress is fine. It could take years, decades even, for your dress to turn yellow. My wedding dress from 2 years ago is hanging in my closet in a garment bag and it looks just as fresh as the day I wore it.

You should store it flat and make sure your garment bag is cloth, not plastic. Plastic has chemicals in it that can discolor your dress, especially when it gets hot. I'm not sure how long that takes, but if it's in plastic now it's probably ok, like pp have said. If you want to keep it long term, you may consider different storage options for after the wedding.

Fortunately for me ive been getting alterations done at mt bridal boutique so they keep the dress there and store it till a day or 2 before wedding and they steam it to so then i just oick it up and good to go..but youll deff want to ask your seamstress about cleaning or steaming before day of so its fresh and not musty from sitting in the bag for while. Dont keep it near light from the outside as that can make a change of color to your dress.

Thanks for the great post Daisy!

My dress has also been sitting in its bag since it arrived from PR after the hurricanes. So I'm gonna have to ask Mom to take a peek at it and make sure it's okay as well. I'm not sure if there is a good cleaners at home anymore so I really hope it's still in good condition Smiley atonished
