I read an article that says California (along with New Jersey, New York, Ohio & Pennsylvania) is one of the states that does not allow making your maiden name your middle name after the wedding. It would require a legal name change. "a legal name change, which requires petitioning for a court order and running ads in local papers notifying the public of the change, and can cost $100 to $400 total."

Is this true? I was hoping to take FH's last name while moving my maiden to middle name. I do not have a middle name. Anyone have experience with this?

Sorry MizizAngi. It was early and this ridiculous law/rule pissed me off. Just don't understand why a state has the right to say what your name can and can't be.

Question...why do you want to change yourmiddle name?? why not just hyphenate or some people just have first midlle last last. I plan to hyphenate. but didnt know anyone changed their middle name till I read this.

@Jessica, I don't have a middle name so it made sense to just slide my maiden name to a middle name while changing my last name to his. I really don't want to hyphenate bc in my career, everyone must be addressed by last name and it would just be confusing. I still want to hold on to my maiden name though so making it a middle name seemed like the perfect way to do it.

For you it makes sense. I just have never heard of anyone ever doing this before I read this post. must not be very common.

I just picked up my marriage license on Friday in Sacramento County and I am using my maiden name as my middle name...

You just wernt allowed to change your first name

And you can't ADD a middle name (and have two), you'd have to hypenate.

Also you HAVE TO PUT YOUR NEW NAME ON YOUR MARRIAGE LICENSE. If you forget to do this it will be a hassle to change it later. There should be a section for your "new" middle name and "new" last name.

Also using a maiden name as a middle name is very common, it seems to be more of a regional thing though so you've either heard of a ton of people doing it or no one doing it.

@OP - I think you should contact your local county recorder's office and see what needs to be done now that you already have your license in hand from Nevada. It may be in your best interest to get a new license prior to the wedding rather than trying to go through the change later. Good luck!

@GameCox - ahhh yes, it was early. It seemed weird to me since I have known many people who use their maiden name as their middle name. Seems like the blog was misinformed.

Jessica - this is incredibly common in the South. It is very rare for a married woman to have a Marie or Ann middle name.

The Clark County (in Nevada) website states the following:

"Your Marriage License and Certificate will be prepared with your legal name exactly as it appears on the identification presented. It is your responsibility to present the proper identification to have your name reflected as you desire. For example, if you want your Marriage License and Certificate to reflect your full middle name, the identification you present must contain your full middle name - not an initial."

It didn't give an option to enter my new middle or last names.

I am in ohio and no one I know has their maiden name as their middle name. I did a facebook poll today and had 151 comments and no one heard of it. so it must be more regional. oh I have family in kentucky and my cousins still have their same middle name.

I would go to your local county clerk office and ask what you should do. It might take a court order to get your name changed in ca if you use a nv license?

Jessica--maybe GameCox should have specified EASTERN south-- Georgia, the Carolinas, Virginia, even some parts of Maryland/DC.

In fact, its so common that many baby girls aren't even given middle names in the South, b/c the assumption is that they will marry and move their maiden name to their middle name. Super old fashioned, but the South loves their traditions. . .
