Magnets to attach decorations to false ceiling tile grid??

cew2, on June 10, 2010 at 10:57 PM Posted in Planning 0 9

So here is what I'm thinking.. over my dance floor I want to have silver beads hanging down in various lengths to give it sparkle. The only problem I have it it would be a pain to string all of those up there one by one. I thought about it and I can get a square dowel rod, then staple the rows of beads to it, then attach the dowel rods to the ceiling grid. I could use string, which would be a pain to put up and take down.......... or maybe I could use magnets?? I would glue a magnet to each end of the dowel rods that I use (they'll be about 3' long each so I think that should be enough magnetism). I think magnets would be easiest for day of preparations and tear down. What do you guys think?? The ceiling grid surely take the magnet since its metal right?? And does anyone know anything about magnets? Will these be strong enough do you think? http://www.amazon.com/Neodymium-Magnet-Discs-Strong-Magnets/dp/B0012KS4AU Thanks!

I buy my magnets from Applied Magnets. If you go to their website directly they have lots of different sizes and they really are very strong. Make sure your ceiling grid is not aluminum.

I think that's a great idea!!! And it should definitely be strong enough.

Have you checked these out? They are small but I swear they could hold up a truck. I love them http://www.amazon.com/Double-Mighties-Magnets-16-Pack/dp/B000EINSWK/ref=pd_sbs_k_4

(I'm in construction) Most ceiling grids are made of aluminum, which is not magnetic. It also may or may not support the weight of the dowels. I would suggest tying them to the grid, but you should check and see what the venue allows before you make anything.

There are hooks that fasten to the grid. You can buy them at a hardware store. Maybe the venue would even appreciate it if you leave them afterwards (for the next event).

Thanks so much everyone! We're going to head out to Menards later and check it all out! Hopefully they'll carry the hooks there so I can check them out! That would probably be easier than gluing magnets anyways!!

Dowel rods would be too heavy. attach the beads to something lighter, like strips of "cardboard" and then run hooks through the strips and hang on the framework. Depending on the weight, large paper slips, if unfolded, could work. You would want to make sure the strips are the same color as the ceiling! Not sure of the price, but even window blind strips (some stores sell replacements).
