Maggie Sottero - Emma Dress - Did I order the right size???

Future Mrs. L now Married!, on September 2, 2014 at 10:28 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 19

I just ordered the Maggie Sottero dress called Emma in Ivory in a size 6. My measurements were chest - 31 which would put me in a size 0 (sucks to be small chested). Waist 27, would put me in a size 6 & hips - 38 which would put me in a size 8. The woman at the store said order a size 6 since it has a corset top. I am now wondering if i should have gotten the 8 and just had them take it in because i don't want the bottom to hug my butt. I tried on a size 10 in the store and the way we had the clips pulling it in tight for the corset and then below the corset it came out a little like with a princess dress but nothing like ballgown big if that makes sense. just wondering if because my hip measurements fell within the size 8 by 1 inch if i should have just went with that and had the seemstress take in the middle and the chest which i will obviously have to get additional cups built in and taken in... This pictures is of the gold in size 10 with clips in the back. I ordered ivory sz 6

Your Maggie is a lot like mine (Chesney). I was advised to order the 10 based on my hip measurement but I ordered the 8. I tried the 8 on in another store and it fit me almost perfectly. Since it doesn't hug the hips like a mermaid, I didn't want to order the dress based on that measurement. I think you ordered the right size

I measured into a 4 for everything but bust (measured into a 6) and she ordered me the 6. Anddddd it barely fits. Like I can't breathe. But mine also doesn't have the forgiveness of the corset. If you are doubting, call back and have them get the 8. I wish I would have!

    Edit: mines not a Maggie

I got a Mori Lee (almost got a Maggie Sottero, though). I was between an 8 for 2 of my measurements and a 10 for another, and the sales associate at the bridal boutique said that based on the measurements she'd recommend an 8, so that's what I ordered. It hasn't arrived yet, but when it doubt, ask the sale's associate's opinion. She's probably seen a million and one girls and she's probably seen your measurements a dozen times and will be able to give you her best recommendation.

I measured as a 6 bust, 8 hip, and 10 waist (Stella York/Essense of Australia), and my consultant recommended I order the 8. I'm a little nervous about it, but I tried on a 6 in an Essense of Australia dress and it was too tight, but I got it zipped, so my consultant was very reassuring that an 8 would require the least amount of alterations. As long as your consultant recommended to order the 6, I think you'll be fine. They know what they are doing.

I got a Maggie. I was a 0 bust and waist but a 4 hip. So the lady said I should order up so it could be taken in. Well the size 4 hangs on me. I think it is hit or miss depending on how they measure you and which style it is. You'll probably be perfectly fine if you have a good seamstress to help you once its in.

I was told to buy the dress based on my hip measurement also. My bust is a size 8, waist a size 4 and my hips were a size 12!! (YIKES) so I ordered the 12 and will have the dress altered to fit the rest of me :-)

I had the same dilemma with sizing of the MS Emma dress. A few things to consider...

    - the overlay of the skirt cannot be easily let out BUT is it looser/larger than the underlayer

    - the underlayer has enough in the seem to gain up to ~1.25 inches extra

    - taking in the bust on this dress (with all the bead-work) from an 8 to almost a 0 will be VERY challenging.

It looks like a modified a-line, right? If thats the case, you should be ok in the 6, if you are losing sleep over it, change it to the 8, you can always alter it down to fit Smiley smile

I was a Maggie bride. My boobs were a 6, but everything else measured a 4. I ordered the 4 and then they ended up having to take it in at the waist. I had a corset back, which helped with the boobs. I'm not sure it would help with the hips, though.

Thank you everyone for your input. :-)

songbird - I would not be taking it down from a 8 to a 0, the chest area will be getting an extra cup so i have a little cleavage and it will be taken in enough so that i don't look like a dude in a dress... lol They said that won't be a problem. My biggest concern is that i don't want the hip area to be snug, that is where i am wondering if the 8 would be better than the 6. I have requested to go back in this coming friday to have them re-measure and for reassurance. I have not heard back yet from the bridal shop however i don't even think they are open yet today. I just ordered it last night so i doubt the order went through yet.

I thought finding the right dress was difficult, now the worrying sets in about the sizing.... 30 dresses and 6 shops later... i want to be stress free!!! :-)

I measured a size 4 in the bust, 6 in the waist and a 10 in my hips. I tried the 8 on in store and it rippled just a tad over the hip area so I went with the consultant's recommendation on ordering a 10. I had to have the bust taken in and the bottom hemmed because it was way too long (I am 5'1"). The reason I ordered up though is because my dress is a fit and flare (no corset). Yours looks to be more of an A-line style, yes?

I am not quite sure what A-line is defined as but I would guess Modified A-Line? The look i want is for the corset area to be pulled in a little more at the waist and below that to look like how it looks in the picture just not baggy or too tight. The bridal shop just called me back and said i could come back to be remeassured before they order. I think i will print out the pictures so i can give them an idea of the look i want and they can tell me which size would be best to do that with.

I was married in Emma (pic included). My chest barely measured a size 4, my waist a size 2 and my hips just barely fell into a 6. I wanted a 4, never in my life have a worn a dress larger than a 4. The lady said you need a 6, blah blah blah. So they ordered a 6. It was way to freaking huge. I was highly upset when I went to try it on. My seamstress did wonders on it and after making it WAY smaller (she said it was like a size 3 if there were such a thing), it fit like a glove and I LOVED it!

Congrats on picking an amazing dress! Smiley smile

And may I suggest when they add the bussel, have them use three buttons underneath and five for the lace. I am not sure what its called, but it made the lace fall way nicer and didnt really give me the awkward poofy butt look. It was slightly time consuming for my BM's to do, but once it was done it stayed perfectly and looked great all evening.

Thanks Chelsea, i will certainly take that suggestion. Curious as to how it looked. I saw another Emma bussled and it looked like a duck tail at the bottom, it was strange looking.

I ordered a Maggie (Fiona) in a size ten. I was super small in bust and waist mearsuments and I fell between a 10-12 for hips. I went with the 10 but easily could have ordered an 8 and been fine (8 is my normal street size). I think you will be perfectly fine.

Evening. Did your dress fit well in the end by buying a size 8? I have a similar problem. I'm a size 6 for waist & bust but a size 8 for hip. I tried the size 10 today and it swamped me... Any advice I'd really appreciate! Thanks

I actually ordered the Size 6 and it fit great. the Corset back really does allow you to make it tighter or looser depending on what your need is. I had cups sewn in but could have still used a little more umph, downside of being small chested. The alterations that i needed were Hemming at the bottom, cup inserts and tacking in the breast area so it did not push out. No alterations to the sides thanks to the corset back. below are pictures of front/back of me in the dress. Size 6, i am 5'7, weigh aprox 135lbs.
