Low-key proposal... And loved it

Chelsea, on June 6, 2016 at 10:18 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 33

Who wants to share their low-key proposals that they just adored?

Mine was perfect, even though FH's plan didn't work out the way he wanted. He wanted the grand proposal with all the bells and whistles, but many factors made that not possible. So here's what happened: We were sitting in a hotel room while I was visiting him (LDR). We had just finished our Thai takeout and were watching one of our favorite shows, Bob's Burgers. When we weren't long distance, this was a regular date night in. We laid back and snuggled up and he just asked. No bells, no whistles. The ring wasn't even in yet. But I loved it, we were being "us," and of course I said yes.

    Love the low key

My husband and I were at his summer cottage, and he went inside for awhile, and he came back out onto the back porch where we were just sitting and reading the afternoon away, and was just like "sooooo do you want to marry me?"

    I said "sure"

And he gave me a ring.

We had arranged a date night together. He took off work and I worked an opening shift at my store. When I came home, he had prepared homemade fondue and dippers. We sat in the living room and ate while watching Family Guy. At one point, FH pauses Netflix, turns to me and says "I love you. And I want to spend the rest of my life with you." He scooted off the couch, pulled a ring box out from under the blanket that was next to him, and asked. He didn't have a ring, either, because we wanted his sister to design and create one for me, so he had gone to Michael's, gotten pipe cleaners, and created a ring himself! It was a perfect fit and I still have it to this day!

I loved a low key engagement. I knew my FH had the ring (at the time he was planning on joining the military so we were planning on marrying before he enlists) but we were at home and I turned around and he was on one knee. He gave a short little "speech" and popped the question. The only ones there were me, him, and our cat. I loved it

    I love your story!

@Zelda - I love your ring! So cute! Smiley smile

FH and I (also LDR) were sitting on my back patio one morning during one of his visits in our sweats and t-shirts having coffee. I went in for a refill and when I came back out, he was down on one knee. Smiley smile

I asked my FH what our plans were for the day and he said "I'm not sure." So I sat in the recliner playing on my ipad and he walked over and said "actually I do have plans for today. we're going to recreate our first 3 dates but first I have a question for you" and asked me to marry him. Both of us still in our jamrooskas (our word for pajamas) it was perfect. We spent the rest of the day celebrating by recreating our first 3 dates.

FH kicked me out of the kitchen and made dinner, which wasn't unusual. I was in my pj's because I wasn't feeling well after work. He continued our typical dinner-time routine (after we finish eating we talk about our days and hold hands...) and then all of a sudden started his proposal. Before I knew what was going on, he was next to my chair on one knee with the ring in his hand. It was so perfect and so us :-)

All your stories are so cute!

My FH was going to propose on Christmas when my whole family was visiting... But he had the kids help him pick out the ring, and he was getting more and more nervous that someone was going to spill the beans, and that Christmas Day wasn't the right time.

So he called me in the bedroom one night and I opened the door and he was on one knee. I was totally surprised and it was perfect!!

And we still got to make the announcement to the family at Christmas, so it worked out fine!

Mine was super low-key too and it was absolutely perfect. He had planned to propose right before Christmas just the two of us so we could celebrate with our families afterwards, but apparently I was acting in a really bad mood (holidays make me anxious) so he held off. Carried the ring around with him everwhere we travelled for the holidays but timing was never quite right. Two days after Christmas I was exhausted and just hanging at home in our PJ's and he just started saying all these amazing things and totally out of the blue popped the question. We went to our favorite restaurant to celebrate afterwards, and my friends came to surprise us the next weekend to celebrate.

I wouldn't have had it any other way.

We went hiking at one of our favorite spots. We always have a little competition of who can catch the most critters. So he bent over a rock and said "Woah, look at this!" So i bent down and was looking all under this rock and i couldn't find anything! Then he said "I already have it, it's in my hands". So i turned around and he was on his knee with the ring in his hands. It was so perfect for us.

I knew my proposal was coming because months before my FH showed me a pic of the ring (why I have no idea he's not so good at keeping secrets lol) and he decided it was a perfect time (november 1) because we were ready. He asked in my driveway lol exactly where he asked me to be his girlfriend. He just got down on one knee and asked if I'd marry him Smiley smile I said yes of course and then we went to Olive Garden lol Smiley smile

Mine was low key. He was gonna make it a spectacle but decided the worst night was the best night. His car kept breaking down and when we finally got home I put my pj's on was trying to get in the kitchen he stopped me and got on one knee and said if you will deal with that for me ill know you'll deal with anything for me. And other stuff but I was too emotional. Lol

Mine was low key. FH did the whole "why do you wanna marry me anyhow?" Thing.

One Friday about 3 weeks ago, FH came home from work while I was sitting on the couch next to my rabbit, watching tv and working on my computer. He set his stuff on the table, took his shoes off, greeted me with hugs and kisses, and I asked if He's ready to start dinner. He said, "nah, let's go out." He went into the bedroom to change. He came back out and wanted to sit down on the couch next to me so I moved the rabbit over to the top of her cage, and he started the whole "why do you wanna marry me anyhow?" Conversation. We talked, and as he was concluding the conversation, he held up the ring that he was hiding in his hand under his beer and asked meSmiley laugh

It was so informal and he didn't get down on one knee, but I loved it more than that. Caught me off guard, in our little apartment, with rabbit as a witness, lol. He then informed me we had dinner reservations at a nice local restaurant in an hour.

My FH and I are in a LDR, but when we first started dating he was in his last year of college studying forestry. There happened to be a university forest near my house where many of our first dates consisted of because he was studying for competitions. Well one weekend when he was visiting he told me to dress up that we were going to dinner at a winery but first we were going to go on a walk in this forest. Well we get there and he starts talking about our relationship and then we get to this tree, and he crouched down to cover up the sign on the tree and asked me the name and the scientific name of the tree (this is a game we have played since we began dating, he usually gives me a kiss if I got it right). Well I eventually got it right and he pulls out this huge pinecone he made into a ring box and asked me to marry him. I couldn't think of a proposal that was really more us.

    These stories are wonderful!

I had told DH (somewhere in the 9 years we dated before he proposed), "Please make it romantic, as if there's some doubt what I'll say!" so, here's what I got:

We had just signed a lease on a new apartment, when DH says, "Oh, I have to stop by the office and pick up something". He came out the door with a classic jeweler's box, and I thought, "Oh, that's my ring!" then I immediately thought, "Nah... you said to make it romantic-- if he wasn't going to do that, he would have talked it over with you."

He got in the car and said, "This is my new I.D. pin and put the box down. We went to a gas station, and,as he's getting out to pump the gas, he says, "Want to see my pin?" and inside was my ring. No romance, no frills, he didn't even really ask. But that was 18 years ago, and we are very happy, so I'm not complaining!

Mine asked me while we were sitting on his couch after work. He had a special date and dinner planned, but decided to ask me earlier. I absolutely loved it!

FH had to work the morning he planned to propose. I was out running errands and he called me to tell me he was headed home, little did I know he was already there. I saw his car in the parking garage and the dog was still in the bathroom (that's where we kept him confined during the day so he had carpet and cool tile to lay on, a water bowl and space to run around and play rather than being crated). All the lights were off and I noticed a piece of paper attached to the wall, it had a clue. FH had left notecards all over some of our favorite spaces in the apartment that led me to the patio where he was and he got down on one knee and proposed.

I had no idea about the proposal, I was expecting it when we went to florida for spring training for the mets or atleast during the mets seasons. FH and I had planned on going to dinner we love hibachi and normally have date nights. The day started out as any other day, I went to work and FH also went to work (or so I thought), he called me like he normally does told me he was going to be home around 1. I was like ok. I got home from work and laid down, I wasn't feeling well. He came home and rang the doorbell. I was like why is he ringing the bell? I looked into the peep hole saw balloons and flowers and I figured it was because I didn't feel good. I opened the door and he got down on one knee, and asked me if I would marry him! I thought he was joking all I kept saying was really and I told him to get up. Of course I said! He had the whole thing planned out, I was so surprised!!! it was really sweet! He was so nervous!

We had a huge fight the day before and I was going to work from home that day and was planning on proposing.

My fiance gets home and we normally watch on the ipad during dinner a tv show or something. He was still very upset and I told him we should watch this before watching the tv show.

It's so hard to surprise him! The video starts playing and it's a video of a montage of our pictures (slideshow) with my proposal words. He starts acting all sad and happy and I thought he knew what was coming.

Finally the last slide is a proposal "WILL YOU MARRY ME?" and he was soooo shocked. He thought it was an apology video the entire time.

I'm all "You seriously thought I could put this together in a few hours?!?!"

    He said yes! Smiley smile

He also said he felt bad watching the video because he was still angry and I was able to look past it. And he was so happy that night he could barely fall asleep.

We designed my ring together so I knew it was coming, but FH still wanted a fairly big proposal. Unfortunately, he didn't realize just how big a mouth my sister had and consulted her to figure out if I would like the proposal he had planned. She of course told me everything, which upset everyone! My best friend/roommate told FH that I knew everything... so he had to change it on the fly! We were on our way to have dinner at his dad's house and he was driving like a maniac (as per usual) and a cop pulled us over. The cop asked him to step out of the car. I was a little worried that a cop had him step out after running his license, but I also felt like he deserved it since he always drives like an idiot! Anyway, the cop asked me to step out as well. When I got around to the back of the car FH was down on his knee with the ring that he had just barely picked up an hour before! Turns out the cop was a friend of his, whose wife was in the passenger seat taking pictures on her phone! So even though I knew more than I should, he still managed to surprise me. Then his whole family was waiting for us and excited when we arrived at dinner! I wouldn't have had it any other way.

Mine was low-key: we went out for a nice dinner, and when we got back, exchanged Christmas presents. His was the ring - he made me close my eyes while he went to get it, and when I opened them, thre he was down on one knee. So he proposed in our living room, in normal clothes - no music, friends, fanfare. It was perfectly us, and I loved it to pieces much more than an orchestrated 'event' that would have made me self-conscious in front of other people.
