Lost save the dates...what to do??

Erin, on July 25, 2018 at 6:33 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 23

So we sent out our StDs on July 11th, and here it is two weeks later and some people still have yet to receive them. The weird thing is, in some cases, we had multiple StDs going to the same address, and one StD arrived, but the others didn't. I called USPS yesterday and they said there's not much they can do and at this point the mail should be considered "missing."

I posted on Facebook yesterday (only guests could see it, of course) and asked people to comment if they hadn't received theirs yet, and a few people said they hadn't gotten theirs yet. This makes me worried that more people haven't gotten theirs than I thought. I included a link to my wedding website and a few people RSVP'd via the site, but not all of our guests use Facebook.

So...what should I do? Should I send an Evite to people who are missing their StDs, or just tell people missing an StD to just check out my website (via email or Facebook)? I don't currently have guest email addresses, so that would mean collecting those (ugh).

Also, now I'm kind of nervous about sending out invites....they cost so much money, and I'm nervous about them going missing again. Anyone have any suggestions for making sure they get to your guests? Should I be checking in with them at certain points to make sure they received their invites?

Are some people super far away? Has anything been returned back to you? You could always do online save the dates. I know getting emails could be a pain but they could come in handy for other parts of the wedding, like e-bites or updates or questions

So frustrating! Out of curiosity, what color were your STD envelopes?

Sounds like you've done all you can by calling USPS and tagging those on FB. Personally, I wouldn't do an evite. If it's few enough people you can call, text, FB, whatever them and just let them know the date.

Unless you are doing a destination wedding/ have a lot of out of towners I wouldn't be too concerned. More so annoyed.

    Sorry that happened!

Yes, most of our guests are out-of-towners (most of our friends live near us in Chicago, but we're having the wedding in Michigan near my family. His family is spread out all over the country). And we've had 2 envelopes returned back so far.

Unfortunately, we do have a ton of out-of-towners--we're having the wedding in Michigan near my family, so all of our friends from Chicago (where we're living now) plus his family and our out-of-state (and in some cases, overseas) friends are flying in. Smiley sad

    And my envelopes were white!

I sent my out on Tues 7/17 from NM and received text from people in Portland, Arkansas, Michigan... but no one in NM (except ones I had delivered)... So it is sooo weird. Most of my people are not on facebook and would require and actual call (which is time consuming!), so I am not sure how to follow up....

    Btw whats your date?

Got it. I guess just spread the word!
The Chicago post office is TERRRRRRRIBLE!
I was curious about the color bc sometimes dark envelopes don’t make it. But nevermind.
Maybe for the wedding invitations you can send from a suburb? I know it sounds crazy but that’s my plan! (I lived in downtown Chicago for ten years and would always drop off mail by family in the suburbs).

This happened to me with my invitations. I mailed invitations July 1 and invitations are still just arriving. I don’t know what’s happening at the USPS. One invite took 5 days to get to an address in the same city; 12 days to get from MD to Michigan; another took 22 days to get to Northern Virginia (1 hour away); invites to the Same house, one received and one not.

I sent my STDs electronically via paperless post. You can send select cards for free.

OH NO!!! This happened with my actual invitations, it is SO annoying! We sent them through USPS too. It's been two months and at least five people that I know of have not received their invites. We have to go through our list and contact everyone to make sure. I'm not sure what other options there are with mailing that wouldn't be too expensive.

Your wedding is in December, so you've got time. People don't RSVP to a Save the Date, it's just to let them know that an invitation will follow and to literally save that date.

Did you use a fancy font for addressing them?

Hopefully it's just taking them longer to get there. Maybe the others that came back might be consistent with what's wrong? Good luck!

In a weird way this is comforting to know, that people still received them, but late...but it’s so annoying!

And yes, I’m looking at Paperless Post too.

Wow, interesting. I do technically live in Chicago rn, but I mailed the envelopes at a sidewalk mailbox in Evanston, which is a suburb. Maybe I need to go out to Skokie next time lol.

Since your wedding is near Christmas, I would send the invitations out a little earlier than wedding wire recommends because the post office will be slow. I would start gathering phone numbers, emails, and contact info on all guest since now, and ask some of your Bridal party (if you have one) or a close friend to be ready around the cut off date for RSVP to call people. Just in case you experience this again.

Also for invitations, I would take them directly to the post office. That way you are sure USPS got them. One piece of advice about wedding planning I read somewhere was "become best friends with the guy at the post office" -- because they can help you through these issues especially if you are interacting with them in person.

Good luck with everything! Try not to get stressed out! It will all be okay because you are getting married!

We had issues with our holiday cards this year, and our only guess was the font wasn't that easy for them to read...even though it really wasn't a crazy font. Some people got them right away, some took forever, some were returned to us immediately, and some were returned to us like a month later! So weird.

I wouldn't re-do the STD, I'd just keep spreading the word of mouth and asking (and have your parents do the same with your relatives) to make sure everyone knows the date even if they didn't get it in the mail.

For the invites, definitely take them to the post office in person to mail, don't just drop them in the mailbox!
