Lose a finger for the ring I love??

AngelaGoodwin, on October 5, 2009 at 4:02 PM Posted in Planning 0 14

This topic is really bugging me... I have been in the Jewelry biz for years, and with the recent rise in quality affordable tungsten rings I have heard plenty of stories of jewelers throwing integrity out the window in order to make a buck! They continue to tell people they might have to 'cut off your finger' if you get in an accident while wearing a tungsten ring. NOT TRUE!! Tungsten is like a diamond, not easily scratched yet can be cracked/broken. Apply enough pressure with a set of vice grips and tadaaaaa....the ring crumbles to pieces and your precious finger is in tact! They tell you that fib so that you will be worried about losing a finger, and opt for a more expensive ring. I always worked with integrity and work hard doing whats right, and other competitors have to lie to make their sales. Its frustrating to me, and more importantly...its just not right!

My husband has a tungsten ring, and he sometimes worried about that, but it wasnt a deal breaker in getting the ring. he just takes it off when playing sports. he HAD to get a hard metal like that because hes work would tear up any ring that isnt that hard, but im glad to hear that it isnt true, thank you :]

A little hammer will bust that sucker right off! We did our research first, but I was quite glad that our jeweler acctually suggested Tungsten for my husband as he works outdoors w/ his hands (he is a forester) and we were worried about scratching. Of COURSE you wouldn't have to cut off a finger, if someone told me that I wouldn't know weather to laugh or SMACK them! LOL

My FI wants stainless steel, he's a farmer so he'll be hard on a ring to...

Only problem is he's scared about hooking the ring on something and losing a finger (I guess it's legit, we know about half a dozen guys that have lost a finger). I would really like him to wear it though. Maybe I'll suggest tungsten!

I cant believe some jewellers are stooping to such a low just for a bigger sale. Thank you for letting all of us know.

Uumm....yeah...I don't understand the angle here but I need to point out to everyone that this is a fishy post....this exact same wording was used on a post on Project wedding except it combined the wording in Angela's post with the youtube link in Ashley's post..this is compounded with the suspicious lack of ANY info in their profiles and not ONE single other post made by "Ashley" here..same with the person who posted on PW.....odd to anyone else? why pretend to be a bride responding to your own post on here? Like I said, I don't get what's trying to be gained I only think something is not on the up and up here! As for the actual topic, I'll agree that jewelers tend to simply push whatever metal is highest on the market that week. But I've never heard anyone imply you would have to have your finger cut off! Only that tungsten can't be resized if you gain weight or knuckles swell with age, stuff like that. no biggie. What's up with this post?

Hmmm.....well either way, fh wants titanium......his last wedding band was titanium, and because it set so high on his finger, it actually saved his finger from being slammed in a steel door on a navy boat...now that he works offshore, he def wants to get titanium or tungsten, since he looks at it as, "hey that tiny thing might SAVE my finger!!!"...rofl, he's such a dork Smiley winking

Mandi, I don't know that tungsten will be any better in your FH's case. Any ring (or jewelry for that matter) can be caught up in machinery and result in injury. He may just want to think about removing his ring at work, considering the number of cases of lost digits you've seen. Just a suggestion...

Didn't say it "bothered" me...I said it was fishy....that isn't a definite that it's a lie, it just means it seemed odd and I wasn't sure why...mostly because between your post and the OP here, it was identical to a post on another site under another name, only this time it was split up...could be coincidence I guess but it just seemed really really odd to me so I had to point it out and ask what was up! If you and the OP are real brides with no agenda then great we'll see more of you and I hope I didn't offend...but we do get vendors, etc posing as brides to promote something in a sneaky way so if I see something fishy I have to call it out that's all...I'm still confused about the "coincidence" here....

Oh and not sure if you realize this but you can see on a person's profile exactly how many time they've posted and where...yours says you have ONLY posted to this so I don't know what other activity and posts you're saying you've been a part of....again that seems odd that you would say that and yet it doesn't show up.....unless you mean the OP's profile "Angela" and yes it says she has been on a few other posts...

Irony about the subject line of the post is that I know of two women who have lost fingers on boats because they were wearing their wedding bands. I never sail with my ring on, and encourage my crew to not sail with jewelery for this reason.

My gosh I can't believe how many people know people that have lost fingers like this! Yeah I don't think the metal matters, it's just a good idea not to wear jewelery during activities like that. I know we never go scuba diving, etc with ours on...but TWO women Matt?!! wow! and Mandi knows 6 people!!! geeze..who knew being married could be so dangerous? LOL

Fishy or not, we were told my husband would lose a finger if he ever broke or jammed it with the ring on, because his finger would swell too much to get the ring off and thats how he would lose the finger. im glad a simple hammer can shatter the ring in this were to ever happen, thanks angela and Libellule for clearing that up.
